The Omanhene of the Gomoa Assin Traditional Council, Obrifo Ahunako Ahor Ankobea II, has issued a forceful call to President John Dramani Mahama to significantly increase the pressure on illegal miners operating within Ghana’s borders. In a statement delivered at the launch of activities marking his 25th anniversary, the traditional leader expressed deep concern over the escalating threat posed by these activities to Ghana’s vital water resources, forests, and other natural assets. Obrifo Ahunako Ahor Ankobea II stated that the persistent illegal mining operation constitutes a serious danger to the nation’s ecological integrity, despite ongoing efforts to curb this problem. He described these individuals as ‘enemies of the state,’ accusing them of deliberately destroying Ghana’s natural wealth through destructive practices.

Following this alarming assessment, the traditional leader urged President Mahama to escalate the fight against illegal mining and implement a more decisive approach, specifically advocating for a ‘shoot-on-sight’ directive. The Gomoa Assin Council has repeatedly highlighted the detrimental impact of these activities on the community, noting a significant increase in environmental damage and a decline in local resources. The traditional leader emphasized that the current measures are insufficient to effectively address the problem, and demands a stronger commitment to enforcement.

Furthermore, the Omanhene expressed grave concern over recent attacks on military personnel deployed to combat illegal mining operations. He condemned these incidents as unacceptable and a violation of national security, emphasizing the need for a greater emphasis on protecting law enforcement officials. He stated that the military’s vital role in safeguarding Ghana’s resources cannot be undermined.

In response to the growing concerns, Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, has raised alarming data regarding declining discipline and substance abuse amongst students across the country. Professor Otami revealed that the Central Regional Director of Education, Professor Juliet Dufie Otami, strongly advocated for traditional authorities to actively support efforts to address these issues. She stressed the need for collaborative efforts involving parents, teachers, and community leaders to instill discipline, responsibility, and positive values within young people. The Central Regional Director also urged parents, teachers and community leaders to work together to instil discipline, responsibility and positive values in young people.

The Gyaasehene of Gomoa Wassa, Nana Kwesi Essel Okyeahene, further appealed to the government and the Ghana Education Service to improve infrastructure and the learning environment in public schools. He argued that investing in these areas would directly contribute to improved teaching and learning while encouraging greater parental involvement in education. The traditional leader stressed the importance of making public schools more attractive and providing the necessary facilities, which would, in turn, positively impact teaching quality and student enrollment rates. He highlighted that enhancing the quality of education is a crucial investment in the future of Ghana, ensuring a skilled and educated workforce to drive economic growth and prosperity.”

This situation underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy to combat illegal mining and safeguard Ghana’s natural and cultural heritage. The Gomoa Assin Chief’s call for a more proactive approach reflects the deep-seated concerns within the traditional community and underscores the critical need for a decisive response to this escalating threat. The government must consider this vital call and take decisive action to protect the nation’s valuable assets.”
