Transparency International Ghana Executive Director Mary Addah has unequivocally called for a comprehensive and exhaustive interrogation of all individuals linked to the ongoing case involving former Goldman Sachs banker Asante Berko, alleging potential bribery. This crucial step, she emphasized, is essential for Ghana to learn from the situation and bolster its efforts to combat corruption within the nation’s legal and ethical framework. The core of Addah’s plea centers on the need to thoroughly examine the roles played by everyone connected to the alleged illicit transactions, a task she views as vital for uncovering the full scope of the alleged wrongdoing.

Adding to this, Mrs. Addah stressed that the investigation must extend beyond the established conviction in the United States, which resulted in Mr. Berko’s prosecution. She contends that Ghana’s legal and ethical standards demand a deeper dive into the Ghanaian dimension of this case, considering individuals who may have been directly or indirectly involved. Specifically, she highlighted the need to investigate potential breaches of law and ethical conduct by public officials, a sentiment echoed by Attorney-General, who stated that Ghana will collaborate with US authorities to examine the local aspects of the matter. The impetus for this intensified scrutiny stems from the recent conviction of Mr. Berko in the United States, which has triggered significant public interest and heightened pressure on Ghanaian authorities.

The call for interrogation was made amidst renewed attention to the case following the conviction of Mr. Berko, who was implicated in a bribery scheme involving a Ghanaian power project. Mrs. Addah asserted that ‘we must also be interrogating all the people who are willing and ready to fight corruption, this is a good opportunity to show that what happened in the past can be brought back to day and be dealt with,’ stressing the importance of accountability. She further elaborated that the investigation represents a significant opportunity for Ghana to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to fighting corruption and ensuring that public officials and private actors are held responsible for their actions. This proactive approach is viewed as a critical step in establishing a robust system of oversight and legal compliance within the country.

The statement underscores a growing sense of urgency within Ghana’s legal and political circles, reflecting a deep-seated desire to address the perceived failings of the past. The investigation’s potential implications extend beyond the immediate case of Asante Berko; it represents a broader commitment to strengthening Ghana’s integrity and ensuring a level playing field for all stakeholders. The government has already initiated a process of evaluating the potential scope of the inquiry, emphasizing the need for transparency and a thorough examination of all relevant information. The focus is now firmly shifting towards uncovering the full extent of the alleged financial transactions and the individuals who may have benefited from them, a task that will undoubtedly be fraught with complexities and potentially significant challenges. The legal team is preparing to engage with individuals identified as potentially connected, aiming to establish a clear timeline and potential culpability.”
