Western Europe has been subjected to an unprecedented surge in heat, with June and July marking the most intense periods of heat recorded in the region this summer, according to the European Union’s climate change monitor. The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) reported an average temperature of 21.62 degrees Celsius (70.9 degrees Fahrenheit) for the two-month period, a 2.79°C (5.01°F) increase above the previous record set in 2022. This exceptional heat surge is a direct result of persistent high-pressure systems, which have trapped heat over the area, significantly amplifying drought conditions. Soil moisture levels were notably lower in July 2026 compared to the last severe drought in Western Europe, according to the monitor’s analysis. ‘July 2026 was the third consecutive month of exceptional heat in Western Europe, bringing the combined temperature for June and July to a new record for the region,’ stated Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. The climate change monitor further highlighted the intensification of heat and drought, linking them to widespread wildfire activity. Several rivers experienced exceptionally low water levels, including the Seine, Rhine, and Danube, impacting water supplies and irrigation. France and Spain also experienced record drought conditions, fueling devastating wildfires, notably a megafire that burned nearly 42,000 hectares (103,785 acres) of land in southwestern France’s Gironde department in late July. Spain’s largest wildfire, which scorched almost 44,000 hectares (108,725 acres) in Avila province near Madrid, also occurred during this period. A recent report by the C3S revealed that the highest sea surface temperatures on record outside the polar regions were recorded in July, with an average sea surface temperature of 20.96°C (69.7°F), a slight increase from the previous record of 20.89°C (69.6°F) in 2023. The monitoring agency also cautioned that large fires can contribute to smoke plumes that travel thousands of kilometers, impacting air quality across Europe and beyond. The C3S further emphasized the potential for smoke to reach areas far beyond Western Europe, reinforcing the broader implications of these extreme heat events for regional and global weather patterns.

Furthermore, the report stated that the sustained high-pressure systems are contributing to the increased intensity of heat and drought, creating a feedback loop that exacerbates these conditions. The European Union has issued warnings about the potential for prolonged heat waves and drought to impact agriculture and water resources across the continent.
