The National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (NCPTAA) has issued a formal and increasingly urgent demand to the West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC), the regulatory body overseeing the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) across Ghana, to significantly expedite the resolution of a multitude of grading concerns that have been escalating throughout the past several months. The NCPTAA’s communication, delivered in a letter dated October 26, 2023, highlights a growing sense of frustration among Ghanaian educators and parents, demanding a tangible and demonstrable commitment to addressing the systemic issues hindering a fair and timely assessment process. The core of the concern centers around a perceived lack of transparency and accountability in the current grading system, coupled with concerns regarding the accuracy and consistency of results across different regions. This isn’t merely a logistical challenge; it represents a fundamental erosion of trust between the government and the education sector, a trust built upon years of dedicated service and rigorous examination standards.

WAEC, responsible for a nationwide assessment that impacts countless students and their futures, has consistently faced criticism regarding the complexity of its grading methodology. The 2026 BECE, a pivotal event in Ghana’s educational landscape, has been plagued by reports of inconsistencies in grading across various schools and regions, sparking significant anxiety among students, parents, and educators alike. The NCPTAA’s letter specifically cites instances of discrepancies in marks, particularly in areas requiring specialized knowledge, as contributing factors to this mounting pressure. They argue that the current timeframe – currently estimated to be around 10-14 days – is demonstrably insufficient to adequately address these issues, and that a more aggressive timeline is imperative for maintaining the integrity of the evaluation process.

The NCPTAA’s position is rooted in a fundamental belief that the current process, while intended to provide a comprehensive assessment, is currently operating at a significant disadvantage. They contend that the lack of clear and readily accessible feedback mechanisms, coupled with insufficient resources allocated to supporting educators in the grading process, is exacerbating the problem. Specifically, the organization points to a recent report indicating a significant backlog of grading requests, with many schools struggling to meet the deadline for completing assessments, particularly in rural areas. This backlog directly impacts the quality of the evaluation, and the NCPTAA fears that continued delays will ultimately undermine the overall value of the BECE.

In response to this critical situation, the NCPTAA has formally requested a 7-day extension to the deadline for the finalization of grading. This isn’t simply a request for more time; it represents a strategic move to force a rapid and decisive action. The NCPTAA’s representative, Dr. Kwame Adomewa, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “The current situation is unsustainable. The well-being of our students, and the continued progress of Ghanaian education, depends on a swift and transparent resolution. A 7-day extension is not a suggestion; it’s a necessity for ensuring fairness and accountability.” She further highlighted that the NCPTAA is committed to working collaboratively with WAEC to develop a revised grading strategy that prioritizes accuracy and minimizes the potential for further disputes.”

WAEC has acknowledged receipt of the NCPTAA’s demands and has indicated it is taking the matter seriously. A spokesperson for the examination body stated that they are ‘evaluating’ the NCPTAA’s request and are ‘exploring’ various avenues to expedite the grading process. However, the speed of this evaluation remains a point of contention, with the NCPTAA stressing that the 7-day extension is a critical lifeline for maintaining public confidence in the BECE system. The board has also announced that it will be establishing a task force composed of educators, administrators, and technical experts to assess the current grading methodology and propose improvements. The task force’s report, expected to be released within the next two weeks, is anticipated to provide a detailed roadmap for addressing the concerns raised by the NCPTAA and ensuring a more equitable and efficient assessment process for the 2026 BECE.

The implications of this situation extend beyond the immediate grading process. The NCPTAA’s demands underscore a broader concern about the long-term stability and effectiveness of the education system. A delay in resolving these grading challenges risks fueling public dissatisfaction and potentially undermining the government’s investment in human capital. The organization’s insistence on a 7-day extension is a crucial signal that the educational community is deeply concerned about the integrity and fairness of the 2026 BECE. The future of the exam, and indeed the trajectory of Ghana’s educational progress, may hinge on the swift and decisive actions taken by WAEC and the NCPTAA.”
