The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has reminded drivers of commercially registered vehicles to obtain the Assembly’s commercial driver’s licence or risk running into trouble during enforcement. The AMA directs drivers operating with yellow registration plates to obtain a commercial driver’s licence from the Assembly in addition to their driving licence issued by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA). The new licence comes in the form of a card and costs GH¢60 for new applicants. Annual renewal costs GH¢23. The AMA clarified that having a vehicle sticker does not automatically mean a motorist must obtain the licence. Even privately registered vehicles with white numbers can be subject to permit requirements when used for commercial activities. The Assembly’s transport enforcement task force can request drivers to produce their licenses for inspection. The AMA emphasized the need for increased public education to reduce confusion and improve compliance with commercial transport regulations.
