Douglas Stewart Carter, who is now 71, was initially convicted of the murder of Olesen in 1985. The state Supreme Court ordered a new trial, citing misconduct by investigators and a judge granting Carter a GPS monitor. He is now required to wear a device while released, with prosecutors stating the case was based on a coerced confession.
