The relationship between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Minority Caucus in Parliament has been underscored following a meeting between New Patriotic Party Flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader. According to a post on X, published following the meeting, Dr. Bawumia expressed confidence in his leadership and urged the Minority to remain focused on the alleged $1.7 billion loss linked to the operations of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and the Bank of Ghana. This loss, representing approximately 1.5% of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), is a significant point of contention within the government’s financial dealings. The meeting, held at Dr. Bawumia’s private residence in Accra, focused on party matters and the agenda for the upcoming emergency session convened by the Speaker of Parliament.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin affirmed Dr. Bawumia’s confidence in the Minority’s leadership, stating that the Caucus will continue to prioritize the alleged loss of over $1.7 billion, a figure that, according to the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) August 2026 report, constitutes equivalent to 1.5% of Ghana’s GDP. He cautioned the Minority against being distracted from this critical matter, emphasizing the need to maintain focus on the alleged loss, which he described as a matter of national interest.
The NPP flagbearer further encouraged the Minority to utilize parliamentary procedures to demand accountability from the government regarding this financial loss. He asserted that the Minority intends to vigorously pursue this matter to the fullest extent of its ability, with the best intentions, and mindful of the Ghanaian people’s interests. The alleged loss remains firmly on the Minority’s parliamentary agenda as Parliament reconvenes for an emergency sitting today. Dr. Bawumia reiterated that this colossal loss, under the watchful eye of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana, represents a key focus for the Minority’s parliamentary investigation.
