The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has issued a critical alert to residents in and around Nawuni in the Kumbungu District of the Northern Region, urging them to prepare for the possibility of significant flooding as rising water levels at the Nawuni intake significantly increase the threat of a potential inundation. A reading taken by NADMO on Saturday, August 23rd, revealed that water levels at the Nawuni intake have risen to an alarming 23.85 feet, placing them firmly within the critical flood range of 20 to 30 feet – a situation that demands immediate attention.
This elevated water level poses a substantial risk, according to NADMO officials, as it increases the potential for the White Volta to overflow its banks and flood nearby communities and farmlands, particularly if additional rainfall occurs in the area. The situation is particularly concerning given the historical vulnerability of the region to flooding events, which have been a recurring concern for decades.
Speaking to JoyNews, Chief Disaster Control Officer, Iddrisu Abubakari Ziblim, acknowledged the situation is currently ‘okay’ but stressed the potential for a significant escalation if further spillage occurs from upstream Burkina Faso. He stated that NADMO is closely monitoring the situation, including rainfall patterns in the area, and is awaiting confirmation from SONABEL, the national electricity company operating in Burkina Faso, regarding the planned spillage of water from the Bagre Dam. Mr. Ziblim indicated that NADMO will be notified as soon as the exact date and time of the spillage is confirmed, with the anticipated floodwaters expected to reach the Northern Region within seven days.
NADMO has been conducting continuous pre-flood monitoring and public sensitization since August 4th, when it received an initial alert from SONABEL through the Water Resources Commission. As part of its preparedness measures, the organisation has also pre-positioned a Rapid Response Team in Walewale in the North East Region, to provide support for emergency response and evacuation operations should the situation deteriorate.
The agency is strongly advising residents in vulnerable communities to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to all official instructions, emphasizing the importance of heightened awareness and proactive response to the evolving flood situation. The situation is being closely tracked and updated as new information becomes available, and the risk of flooding remains a top priority for NADMO and local authorities.
Furthermore, the current elevated water levels at the Nawuni intake are a direct consequence of the reduced flow of the river, which is a result of the increased rainfall and subsequent runoff. This contributes to the increased risk of flooding, highlighting the need for continued monitoring and proactive mitigation strategies.
