Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has defended his description of Ghana as a potential “hub” for cocaine-related activities, asserting the comment was metaphorical and intended to highlight concerns regarding drug movement. He argued that the statement should not be interpreted as a claim requiring specific evidence of Ghana being a cocaine hub. Speaking in an interview on Adom TV’s Badwam, he stated that the comment was based on fears of cocaine passing through Ghana’s borders and the alleged involvement of government officials. He further explained that repeated incidents involving cocaine alleged to pass through Ghana, coupled with arrests, raised questions about the effectiveness of Ghana’s border controls and generated an environment where cocaine could be allowed to flow through the country without proper checks. He likened the situation to establishing a lab, implying that if a significant volume of cocaine occurs and arrests are made, it facilitates the trade and, consequently, creates a potential hub for the business to be processed. He maintained that the language was a metaphor, intended to illustrate the possibility of Ghana becoming a hub if cocaine were to be brought into the country and moved onward to other destinations. He further asserted that his comments were a reiteration of concerns previously raised by the Interior Minister, stating that the Minority Leader’s statements were merely re-asserting what the Minister had already conveyed.”
