Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor Dr Johnson Asiama has revealed a significant challenge impacting Ghana’s international reserves – intensified by geopolitical tensions originating in the Middle East. The BoG’s assessment indicates a period of considerable pressure on the country’s reserves, which recently fell from a peak of US$14.1 billion to US$12.9 billion, as reported by the July Economic and Financial Data released by the Bank of Ghana.
This concerning decline, a result of the ongoing global developments, has prompted Dr. Asiama to emphasize the critical importance of maintaining robust reserves as a safeguard against external economic shocks. He stated, ‘This is why we can say that one of the good things we did last year was to build some high reserves for interesting times like this.’
Dr. Asiama underscored the necessity of these reserves, particularly during heightened global economic uncertainty. He explained that maintaining adequate reserves is a complex undertaking, requiring difficult choices when confronted with external shocks. The Governor highlighted the need to bolster earnings from cocoa exports and non-traditional exports, which currently account for approximately 10% of Ghana’s exports. He further advocated for increasing these non-traditional exports to 15%, arguing that this increased revenue stream holds significant potential for supporting the country’s broader economic development.
The Governor acknowledged the potential of remittances, particularly the more than US$8 billion received through these transfers, to bolster the country’s reserves and drive economic progress. He suggested channeling a significant portion of this wealth – over US$8 billion – into productive investments rather than consumption, a strategy designed to stimulate economic growth and create opportunities for the Ghanaian people. The BoG is actively exploring strategies to mitigate the impact of these challenges and safeguard Ghana’s financial stability. According to the BoG’s analysis, the situation necessitates a proactive approach to managing reserves, emphasizing the importance of diversification and strategic investment.” ,
