Emergency services in Battersea, South London, responded to a call on Friday afternoon reporting a man unresponsive at an address. The man, identified as Jason Arday, former University of Cambridge professor, has tragically been found dead. The discovery follows a significant plagiarism row that has shaken the academic community and ignited a fierce debate about research integrity. Arday resigned his position as a Cambridge professor of sociology of education last week after allegations of plagiarism and concerns regarding the quality of his work. He vehemently denied the claims, stating he had simply made errors in his research. His family expressed profound shock and grief, describing him as a gentle and kind man who always valued the best in others. The incident is the culmination of a protracted campaign of misinformation, initiated by a fellow academic, Nathan Cofnas, who publicly accused Arday of numerous instances of plagiarism in his work. Cofnas, who was dismissed from his Cambridge role in 2024, argued that Arday’s early academic work stemmed from mimicry, a technique he relied on to make sense of information. The controversy first erupted after Cofnas publicly raised concerns about plagiarism in Arday’s thesis and journal publications, which were subsequently investigated by Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). LJMU awarded Arday his PhD in 2015, highlighting his early success. However, the investigation’s conclusion was a setback for Arday, who stated that the scrutiny he had experienced had become ‘unrelentingly personal and targeted.’ Cambridge University vice-chancellor Prof. Deborah Prentice expressed her sorrow, stating: “We are desperately saddened to hear this tragic news.” The university initially confirmed that claims of plagiarism regarding Arday’s thesis and some journal publications had been investigated by LJMU and the journals in question. LJMU – which awarded Arday his PhD in 2015 – concluded that he had not plagiarised work. Earlier this week, Cambridge announced an independent investigation into his appointment, conducted by senior academics from within and beyond the university. The investigation, announced in a letter to university staff, detailed the concerns raised across the university and well beyond, regarding Jason Arday’s appointment and the need for thorough and transparent oversight. The university initially said claims of plagiarism regarding Arday’s thesis and some journal publications had been investigated by Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) and the journals in question. LJMU – which awarded Arday his PhD in 2015 – concluded that he had not plagiarised work. The independent investigation, spearheaded by senior academics, is intended to address the concerns raised across the university and beyond. The university initially said it was “shocked and saddened” by the death of a former colleague. Professor Kehinde Andrews, a Black Studies professor and friend of Arday, described him as “very down” after resigning. Andrews stated that Arday had lost a significant amount of weight, and that there was a sense of deep distress amongst his peers. The university initially stated it was “shocked and saddened” by the death of a former colleague. Durham University, another of Arday’s former employers, described him as “a kind and warm person, who actively sought to promote opportunities for PhD students.” Last weekend, Arday cancelled an event promoting his memoir. Publisher Simon & Schuster had previously indicated that the book, ‘Great And Unfortunate Things,’ would be published in the UK on August 27th. The book, which chronicles Arday’s life from his non-verbal state until the age of 11, and his subsequent struggle with reading and writing, was released in the US earlier this week. The university stated in a statement that it was
