The United States has repeatedly signaled a potential ‘indefinite’ naval blockade of Iran, intensifying existing tensions and raising serious concerns about the long-term implications for the region. This threat, amplified by recent reports of escalating tensions on the Strait of Hormuz, reflects a deepening strategic standoff between the two nations.

Following reports of sailors attempting to jump overboard aboard the flagship USS Abraham Lincoln, the US Navy has maintained a naval presence in the region, despite President Trump’s assertions of complete control over the waterway. The Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil transit route, has been closed since March, and the US has been actively conducting maritime security and blockade operations.

Despite President Trump’s claims, Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) has posted on X, indicating that the Strait remains blocked and that reopening will only occur after Iran’s conditions are met. This stance contradicts previous US statements, as the PGSA has repeatedly stated that the Strait will not be reopened until Iran’s demands are met.

In a recent briefing to reporters, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the US Navy can maintain a blockade indefinitely, citing its rotating fleet and continued operations. Hegseth also highlighted the potential for significant economic isolation, with the blockade squeezing Iran’s most vital source of income – crude oil – and further straining its economy.

However, concerns are mounting about the conditions on board the USS Abraham Lincoln, the US’s flagship aircraft carrier, which is conducting maritime security and blockade operations. Reports have surfaced detailing declining mental health and morale among sailors, alongside cases of suicidal ideation, raising serious questions about the operational environment.

Several media outlets, including Al Jazeera, have reported on these issues, further fueling anxieties about the potential impact on the US Navy’s readiness and operational capabilities.

Experts suggest that extended deployments, like the nine months for the USS Abraham Lincoln, can erode readiness and capability, particularly as the Trump administration has repeatedly committed US forces to conflicts and relies on carrier operations.

Harlan Ullman, a retired senior naval officer and chairman of The Killowen Group, cautioned that ships require routine maintenance to keep advanced technology operational over long periods. He emphasized that maintaining operational readiness is crucial for naval effectiveness, and prolonged deployments diminish the ability to repair and extend maintenance.

Ullman further argued that the US administration should prioritize naval readiness over political considerations, suggesting a policy shift to recognize the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz.

The US blockade has also been a key component of Iran’s economic strategy, aiming to destabilize the region by disrupting oil exports.

Iran has been attempting to put economic pressure on neighboring countries, particularly Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, by launching attacks on US military assets and infrastructure, further complicating the situation.

Mostafa Khoshcheshm, a professor at the University of Applied Sciences and Technology in Tehran, believes that Iran could use this economic pressure to push the Houthis to tighten the noose around regional energy exports. He also suggests that Iran’s leaders are not under the same internal political pressure as the Trump administration.

“Tehran’s calculus is that if it’s going to defeat the United States, it should be asymmetrical warfare, and in this economic warfare, the Strait of Hormuz matters the most,” Khoshcheshm stated. “Iran knows that if it’s going to defeat the United States, it should be asymmetrical warfare, and in this economic warfare, the Strait of Hormuz matters the most,” he added.

Iran is also hoping that the US will simply acknowledge defeat and leave the region, and this is a significant point of contention. The US has been focused on isolating Iran economically and strategically, and the Strait of Hormuz is a critical point of leverage.

Experts suggest that the US’s approach to the Iran-US relationship could be detrimental. The US needs to consider the long-term consequences of the blockade and its potential impact on global energy markets. The situation could further escalate, leading to instability in the region.
