The National Peace Council (NPC) has issued a powerful statement emphasizing the critical importance of dialogue and peaceful coexistence as cornerstones of maintaining Ghana’s stability, particularly in the face of recent heightened religious tensions. Speaking on behalf of its Chairman, Executive Secretary George Amoh, the NPC underscored that Ghana’s religious diversity, rather than being a weakness, should be viewed as a strength – a vital asset that demands careful management.

The NPC’s remarks, delivered at a meeting between the Inspector-General of Police and religious leaders at the Police Headquarters in Accra on Friday, August 14th, highlighted the Council’s unwavering commitment to fostering an environment where differences in faith are addressed through constructive engagement. Mr. Amoh stated, ‘Ghana’s religious diversity should be treated as a strength, not a weakness, and that exploitation of religious differences could destabilize the country.’

Acknowledging that disagreements and acts of deviance are an inherent part of any society, the NPC stressed that Ghana’s governing institutions must possess effective mechanisms to manage these situations proactively. He cautioned against assuming that recent events would necessitate a violent response, emphasizing the need for peaceful resolution through dialogue and lawful processes. ‘Violence cannot be used to respond to violent conduct,’ Mr. Amoh asserted, urging citizens to rely on dialogue and established legal frameworks for resolving grievances. The NPC reiterated Ghana’s history of successfully uniting people of diverse backgrounds – encompassing different religions, languages, and cultures – under a single national identity.

Furthermore, the NPC underscored the importance of recognizing that faith does not preclude a shared national identity. It stressed that Christian and Muslim communities, for example, should recognize the importance of protecting Ghana’s peace through mutual respect and a collective responsibility to uphold the nation’s integrity. The NPC reiterated the need for collaboration among all stakeholders, including the Police, religious leaders, state authorities, and ordinary citizens, in safeguarding peace.

The meeting included a segment where Sheikh Aremeyaw, a prominent religious leader, delivered a vital message to Christians and Muslims, emphasizing the need for understanding and cooperation despite religious differences. This underscores the NPC’s conviction that fostering understanding and minimizing conflict is crucial for Ghana’s continued progress. The NPC has repeatedly stated that the Council is dedicated to ensuring that the country’s peaceful coexistence is continuously maintained and strengthens the foundations of national unity.

The NPC’s statement represents a significant step in addressing the anxieties surrounding religious tensions, reaffirming the Council’s dedication to safeguarding Ghana’s stability through dialogue and peaceful resolution. The focus remains on preventing escalation and maintaining a harmonious environment for all citizens, regardless of their faith.

It is also important to note that the meeting occurred shortly after recent reports of heightened tensions and potential incidents across the country, highlighting the urgency of the NPC’s call for proactive measures.
