His appeal follows a recent viral video depicting the pastor allegedly making offensive statements, sparking concerns about potential religious division and the potential for further unrest. The incident, triggered by the video’s circulation, has intensified discussions regarding the long-standing interfaith relations within the nation. Bishop Lawson emphasized that Ghana’s religious diversity should be viewed as a source of strength, not division, and stressed the responsibility religious leaders hold in fostering harmony.
He stated, ‘Ghana is a nation blessed with religious diversity, and our ability to live together in peace remains one of our greatest strengths.’ He specifically underscored the influential role religious leaders play in their congregations and communities, highlighting the significant responsibility this carries, especially during periods of heightened sensitivity. ‘As religious leaders, we occupy positions of tremendous influence,’ Bishop Lawson affirmed, ‘and our words have the power to promote understanding, tolerance, and unity.’
He urged religious leaders to reject conduct capable of deepening religious divisions, advocating instead for dialogue, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence. The Christian Council chairman repeatedly emphasized the need to actively counter provocation rather than retaliatory actions, suggesting instead a focus on constructive engagement. He instructed religious leaders to actively promote responsible citizenship and discourage inflammatory behavior, suggesting the police service should work closely with religious institutions to maintain stability. Bishop Lawson also acknowledged the IGP’s earlier engagement, stating that the IGP’s positive and constructive remarks demonstrated a commitment to addressing the situation.
Furthermore, Bishop Lawson highlighted the shared national identity of Christians and Muslims, stressing that religious affiliation should not overshadow citizenship.
