A devastating accident occurred on the Kumasi-Accra Highway on Friday, August 14, 2026, resulting in the loss of one life and leaving several other individuals injured. The incident, which took place approximately 10 kilometers west of Juaso, near the Otuo Srebour section of the highway, has triggered a thorough investigation by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and local authorities.

The crash involved a Sprinter bus, registration number AD 8272-26, traveling from Accra to Kumasi, with a significant number of passengers on board. The bus was heading eastbound when it collided with a long vehicle traveling in the opposite direction – a passenger vehicle – on the same stretch of road. Initial reports indicate that the Sprinter bus was traveling at a moderate speed when it struck the long vehicle, causing significant damage to both vehicles.

The accident occurred at a point known as Otuo Srebour, a crucial junction on the highway, and is currently the focal point of emergency response efforts. According to sources close to the scene, the impact was forceful, leading to the immediate death of one passenger within the bus. The precise nature of the passenger’s injuries is still being assessed.

The GNFS has confirmed the death of one male passenger, identified as Mr. Kwame Adehye, who was a resident of Accra. The body has been transported to Yawkwei Steward Mortuary for preservation and to facilitate further investigation into the cause of the collision.

“We are currently conducting a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding this tragic event,” stated a spokesperson for the GNFS. “Our priority is to ensure the safety of the public and to ascertain whether any negligence contributed to this accident. The investigation will include reviewing traffic camera footage, examining vehicle maintenance records, and interviewing witnesses.”

The long vehicle involved in the collision is currently unknown, but authorities are working to identify it through traffic camera analysis. The extent of the damage to the long vehicle is substantial, suggesting a high-speed impact. Early reports suggest that the vehicle sustained significant front-end damage, potentially impacting its ability to continue safely.

Police have established a control point near the accident site, and traffic is currently being diverted along alternative routes. The highway is expected to remain closed for an extended period while the investigation is completed. Authorities are urging motorists to exercise caution and to avoid the area.

Preliminary reports indicate that the vehicles were travelling at speeds that were within the legal limit, though the exact speed of the Sprinter bus is still under investigation. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as they become available. The incident highlights the need for enhanced safety measures and regular maintenance on major roadways, particularly in areas with high traffic volume.

The impact of this accident is being felt across the Kumasi-Accra corridor, with significant delays affecting commuters. Residents are expressing concern about the potential for further incidents and are urging the authorities to prioritize a thorough investigation to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The investigation is expected to continue for several days, and authorities are working to determine the full extent of the damage and potential liabilities.

This accident underscores the vulnerability of highways to sudden and unexpected events, emphasizing the importance of robust traffic management systems and preventative maintenance programs. The GNFS is working closely with local law enforcement and emergency responders to ensure the safety of all road users.
