The National Sports Authority (NSA), led by Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has cautiously acknowledged a critical challenge in Ghana’s preparations for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027: the lack of suitable venues to host the competition. This marks the second iteration of Ghana’s hosting, following a successful inaugural event in 1999, and the tournament will coincide with the nation’s 70th Independence Anniversary.

Ankrah stated that, as of today, Ghana’s sporting facilities are currently inadequate to meet the stringent standards mandated by CAF, the governing body for African football. ‘As of today, we can’t play the (U-20) AFCON in any of our venues,’ he emphasized, acknowledging the immediate constraint. However, he asserted that proactive measures could be undertaken to address this gap, contingent upon securing adequate funding.

The NSA boss stressed the importance of financial investment, highlighting that CAF’s infrastructure requirements will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in the upgrading process. ‘It’s all about funding, and it’s about improving the structures that CAF would want to have in place,’ he explained. He further indicated that efforts are underway to enhance existing facilities, specifically focusing on improving playing surfaces, but cautioned that this process necessitates a substantial timeframe and dedicated resources.

The NSA is actively working to refine its long-term vision for sporting infrastructure, including the development of new facilities and improvements to existing ones. They’ve outlined plans to enhance playing surfaces and other crucial elements, though the process necessitates a considerable period of preparation. The NSA’s ultimate objective is to achieve the required deadlines, ensuring the successful hosting of the U-20 AFCON tournament, and they are currently in a transitional phase.

The director underscored that, at this point, the focus is on improving existing venues, with the grass being a primary priority, and a comprehensive roadmap will be developed once CAF provides final approval. ‘We’re in transition to trying to improve our venues, including the grass. So, we need time to prepare for that,’ he stated. ‘And once the final green light from CAF comes from CAF, the roadmap would be put in place, and hopefully, we’ll be able to beat certain deadlines to host the tournament,’ he concluded, emphasizing the need for strategic investment and meticulous planning to ensure a successful tournament.

According to sources within the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the initial assessment suggests a significant investment is required to upgrade venues and meet CAF’s standards. The GFA has previously expressed concerns regarding the state of Ghana’s sporting infrastructure, highlighting the need for a substantial overhaul to facilitate the tournament’s success. The NSA’s statement reinforces the importance of this investment and underscores the challenges facing Ghana’s sporting sector in preparing for the 2027 AFCON.

This situation represents a crucial juncture for Ghana’s footballing future, demanding strategic planning and substantial financial commitment to ensure the tournament’s smooth execution and success.
