Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, has recounted how he nearly lost his life during his six-year stay in South Africa, amidst renewed concerns over attacks on foreign nationals in the country. This harrowing experience highlights a deeply personal and significant vulnerability experienced by the Apostle, prompting a renewed focus on security measures within Ghana and its diaspora.

Apostle Nyamekye stated that his years in South Africa exposed him directly to the multifaceted security challenges confronting Ghanaians and other migrants. He described the situation as profoundly unsettling, emphasizing the tangible threat posed by the vulnerabilities he encountered. For nearly six years, he lived within the country, enduring a significant amount of adversity, and suffered a harrowing experience where he almost succumbed to danger.

Specifically, Apostle Nyamekye recounted being confronted by armed robbers on two separate occasions. One incident, he described as particularly dangerous, involved a robbery that left him fearing for his life. “I lived in South Africa for about six years, and I suffered a lot from these things. I almost died in South Africa. Two times, I was accosted by armed robbers. The last one was too dangerous. When I was leaving South Africa, my luggage was stolen,” he said. These incidents, he emphasized, were a stark reminder of the precariousness of life in a region often marked by instability.

Furthermore, his experience extends beyond physical threats; Apostle Nyamekye also recalled returning to South Africa after a national deacon of The Church of Pentecost was kidnapped during a church service. This added another layer of worry and underscored the vulnerability of individuals within the community.

He explained that the experiences gave him a deeper appreciation of the insecurity and difficulties some Ghanaians encounter while living and working in South Africa. He stressed the importance of proactive measures to safeguard the well-being of his fellow citizens.

This sentiment comes at a critical juncture, with renewed concerns escalating following recent xenophobic incidents and a heightened security landscape involving Ghanaians in South Africa. The government and international organizations are actively monitoring the situation, and the Ghanaian community is increasingly vigilant. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has acknowledged the concerns and is working to address the situation, emphasizing the need for robust security protocols.

Apostle Nyamekye’s account serves as a poignant example of the potential dangers faced by individuals abroad, reinforcing the importance of vigilance and the need to strengthen security measures. His story underscores the vulnerability of foreign nationals in a region experiencing heightened tensions. The Church of Pentecost’s leadership has been publicly supportive of the Apostle, recognizing the significance of his experience and acknowledging the need for continued support and dialogue.

This situation is particularly concerning given the recent kidnappings of national deacons in South Africa. The Apostle’s experience highlights the broader threat to security within the region, prompting a re-evaluation of security strategies and collaborative efforts.

His comments come amidst a broader national discussion about the need for enhanced safety and security measures, reflecting a growing awareness of the challenges faced by Ghanaians residing and working in South Africa. The authorities are exploring potential solutions, including increased patrols and diplomatic efforts, to mitigate the risks and safeguard the interests of the Ghanaian community. The situation demands a collaborative approach, combining local knowledge with international support to ensure the safety and security of all individuals involved.
