The world of food is poised for a dramatic transformation, driven by advancements in gene-editing technology. CRISPR-Cas9, a revolutionary tool, is offering unprecedented precision in modifying plant genomes, promising higher yields, improved resilience, and reduced environmental impact. This shift represents a fundamental change in how crops are created, sparking both excitement and considerable debate.

Developed in 2012 by Drew Pillsbury and his team at Northwestern University, CRISPR-Cas9 is a powerful system that allows scientists to precisely edit DNA sequences within plants. Unlike traditional breeding methods, which rely on random mutations and unpredictable outcomes, CRISPR offers targeted modification, dramatically accelerating the process of creating desired traits.

Pairwise, a North Carolina startup, is at the forefront of this revolution, using CRISPR to craft seedless, thornless, and highly productive blackberry plants—and in a matter of years rather than decades. Their triple-threat berries aim to address critical challenges facing modern agriculture, including deforestation, food scarcity, and the need for more sustainable practices. The company’s initial focus on non-bitter greens demonstrates the technology’s versatility, paving the way for broader application.

The company’s success has attracted significant investment, with over 50 regulatory approvals from nine countries, including the United States, signifying a growing acceptance of gene-editing technology. Pairwise’s initial venture with a mustard green demonstrated the potential for commercial viability, quickly pivoting to focused crop development.

Beyond blackberries, Pairwise is tackling other pressing agricultural issues. They are developing peaches without pits, row crops resistant to a variety of diseases, fruit and nut trees producing their first harvest within a year or two, and a suite of novel products, including more efficient methods of fertilizer use. These innovations are designed to bolster food security and resilience, particularly in a world facing escalating environmental pressures.

However, the rise of CRISPR isn’t without its challenges. The technology has faced scrutiny from regulatory bodies, with some expressing concerns about potential unintended consequences. The controversy surrounding GMOs, particularly the risks associated with Roundup Ready crops, underscores the need for careful consideration of the long-term impacts of genetic modification.

Despite these concerns, CRISPR offers a compelling pathway to enhance agricultural productivity. Experts believe the technology will likely accelerate the pace of change, making it a more accessible and democratic tool.

Early estimates suggest that CRISPR can be up to 95 percent faster than conventional plant breeding, and artificial intelligence models are helping pinpoint the most effective editing points. The potential benefits are enormous, and the dream of tastier, healthier food grown on higher-yielding, less-polluting farms is no longer a pipe dream. However, the transition to gene-editing is not without its complexities.

The UK’s Tropic Biosciences is bringing a non-browning banana to market, yet funding for gene-editing research remains a challenge. Venture capital firms are cautious, acknowledging the slow pace of change and the potential for repeated mistakes.

The US Food and Drug Administration is regulating edited animals as if they were drugs, and has required scientists to incinerate them after studying them. The EU, which has restricted most GMO’s, moved last month to treat most gene-edited crops like regular ones. The challenge lies in balancing innovation with responsible regulation, ensuring that the benefits of CRISPR are realized while mitigating potential risks to human health and the environment.

Looking ahead, CRISPR-Cas9 is poised to reshape agriculture, offering unprecedented control over crop traits. The future of food production will likely be inextricably linked to this technology, demanding careful consideration of its ethical and societal implications.
