The Odumase-Santenso region of the Ashanti Region has reported the tragic death of three individuals following a catastrophic collapse of a mining pit, resulting in a devastating incident that has ignited public concern within the municipality and beyond.

On Friday, August 7, 2026, at approximately 4:00 p.m., a report was received from residents alerting authorities to a rapidly collapsing pit, prompting a swift and intensive rescue operation. The incident occurred within a mining area designated as ‘one-man’ mining, a localized form of small-scale extraction practiced by individuals using makeshift equipment to locate gold.

Caretaker Assembly Member for the area, Isaac Kyei Andoh, confirmed the situation, stating that residents immediately alerted the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) following the initial collapse. He subsequently arranged for a backhoe to be brought in to retrieve the trapped victims, however, the equipment malfunctioned, rendering it incapable of fully excavating the pit.

Initial reports indicate that the victims, a man and two women, were between 21 and 25 years of age. The precise nature of their involvement in ‘one-man’ mining remains unclear, though the practice is a prevalent and often dangerous activity within the region, characterized by individuals digging deep pits with rudimentary tools in search of gold.

Following the initial rescue efforts, traditional rites were performed at the scene to honor the deceased. The remains were subsequently conveyed to the Odumase-Santenso mortuary, where they are currently undergoing formal identification and investigation.

The incident has amplified existing concerns about the inherent risks associated with unregulated mining operations in the area, particularly concerning the loss of young lives and the potential for further accidents. Local authorities are emphasizing the need for stricter regulations and monitoring to mitigate these dangers and ensure the safety of local communities.

Local officials have stated that the investigation is ongoing, and further details regarding the specific circumstances surrounding the collapse are expected to be released as they become available. The full scope of the mining operation and the individuals involved remains under scrutiny.

As of this writing, the exact cause of the pit collapse remains under investigation. The Ashanti Regional Police Force has confirmed that they are leading the investigation and are collaborating with local authorities to determine the full extent of the tragedy and prevent similar incidents in the future.

This incident underscores the vulnerability of these mining areas, particularly given the prevalence of unregulated activity and the potential for preventable fatalities. The community is demanding a thorough examination of the regulations and oversight mechanisms governing mining operations within the region, to safeguard the well-being of its residents.”
