The Ghana Education Ministry is currently awaiting formal approval from Cabinet before the revised curriculum for Kindergarten to Primary Six, developed by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), can be officially adopted nationwide. A recent announcement from Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu highlights this protracted process, stating that the government has not yet formally ratified the new framework. According to the Minister, the proposed curriculum is currently undergoing a rigorous review process within the Ghana Education Service (GES) following its submission last month. Mr. Iddrisu emphasized that the GES assessment is a crucial step, followed by a thorough consideration and approval by Cabinet before the revised curriculum can be implemented on a wider scale. He indicated that the Ministry intends to collaborate closely with the GES and other relevant agencies, including the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, to ensure the successful rollout of this significant shift in educational policy. The revised curriculum, according to Iddrisu, places a strong emphasis on moral values and aims to move beyond traditional classroom learning, advocating for a more holistic approach to education. Specifically, it seeks to expand the curriculum by incorporating emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), electronics, and digital learning. The Minister stressed that this represents a significant shift in the Ministry’s strategy, with a particular focus on preparing learners for the future workforce by fostering critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and character development – elements that are deemed vital for success in the 21st century. The proposed curriculum’s broadened scope includes introducing advanced subjects like Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and STEM fields, designed to bridge the gap between basic education and the demands of a rapidly evolving technological landscape. This initiative, Minister Iddrisu asserted, is a direct result of President Mahama’s Reset Agenda, which prioritized the introduction of these technologies at the foundational level. The Ministry has stated that the revised curriculum will be implemented starting with the KG level, with a phased rollout to Primary Six. A key aspect of this transition will involve a comprehensive evaluation of the existing educational infrastructure and resources to ensure a smooth and effective implementation. The process is currently being overseen by the GES, with the Ministry of Education maintaining a critical role in the final stages of review and approval, ensuring alignment with national educational goals. The initial assessment timeline is estimated to be approximately six to eight weeks, though the Minister acknowledged potential delays due to the complexity of the review and the involvement of multiple stakeholders. The long-term implications of this decision remain to be fully assessed, but it signals a deliberate effort to modernize the Ghanaian education system and prepare students for a future dominated by technological advancements. The government is committed to ensuring a well-prepared and adaptable workforce, and this curriculum represents a fundamental shift in educational priorities.”” ,
