The Mankralo of the Mepe Traditional Council in the Volta Region, Togbe Kwasi Nego VI, has initiated a formal appeal to the government regarding the extension of the Sege-Mepe Road project, specifically aiming to connect the Mepe and Accra-Aflao Highway at Dove Junction. This request stems from a critical need to address significant infrastructural challenges impacting the community, particularly during emergencies and as a vital link for trade and regional development.

According to Togbe Kwasi Nego VI, the existing road network in Mepe is severely compromised, posing substantial obstacles to commuters, traders, students, health workers, and farmers. The current condition creates considerable difficulties, especially during inclement weather or in the event of a crisis, hindering efficient movement and economic activity. He emphasizes the strategic importance of this extension, viewing it as a crucial component of regional connectivity.

The extension is strategically significant because it provides a vital link between Mepe, neighboring communities, and the national highway through the Eastern Corridor. This enhanced connectivity is paramount for facilitating trade, agricultural expansion, tourism, and investment opportunities within the Volta Region and beyond. The government’s recent investment in the Sege-Mepe Road project, a development lauded by Togbe Kwasi Nego VI, is viewed as a positive step, but he stresses the urgent need for additional resources to fully realize its potential.

He highlights a considerable deficit in basic infrastructure and essential public services within Mepe. Despite Mepe’s significant contributions to Ghana’s development and the number of distinguished citizens it has produced, the area continues to struggle with inadequate infrastructure and vital public services. Togbe Kwasi Nego VI underscores the need for sustained government attention to bridge this development gap and improve the living conditions of residents.

The anniversary celebration of Mepe’s 70th Afenotor Festival underscored the community’s resilience and unity, further emphasizing the importance of regional development. Togbe Kwasi Nego VI expressed deep gratitude to the government, particularly the Director-General of the Ghana TVET Service, Dr Eric Adzroe, for the substantial absorption of the St Luke Technical Institute at Mepe-Dadome, a key initiative reflecting the government’s commitment to regional education. He acknowledged Professor Emeritus E.H.K. Akaho, former Director-General of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, for his dedication to establishing the technical school, a landmark achievement.

However, he maintains that the area requires significant additional staff, equipment, and expanded infrastructure – including workshops, dormitories, and classrooms – to enable the institution to effectively deliver technical and vocational training. He requests a substantial investment in these areas to bolster the institution’s capacity and support the development of a skilled workforce, ensuring the long-term sustainability of Mepe’s economic and social progress. Togbe Kwasi Nego VI explicitly calls for a commitment to addressing this critical infrastructure deficit and improving the quality of life for the residents of Mepe and the broader region.”
