The Catechist of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Trinity Congregation at Goaso in the Ahafo Region, Ernest Nti Twum, has issued a compelling call to Christian youth across Ghana to actively champion the cause of environmental protection. This urgent message underscores a growing concern regarding the escalating destruction of the nation’s natural resources, demanding a concerted effort from the younger generation to safeguard the planet. Mr. Twum’s statement, delivered during a recent interview with Adom News at the 39th Annual District Conference of the Young People’s Guild (YPG) of the Goaso District, highlights a critical juncture where individual responsibility and collective action are paramount. The situation, he emphasized, poses a significant threat to Ghana’s ecological well-being and necessitates a proactive response from the youth.

Mr. Twum underscored that the practices of illegal mining, the unlawful extraction of timber, and widespread littering are major contributors to the degradation of the environment. He explicitly identified these activities as a critical point of concern, stating that Christian youth possess the potential to play a pivotal role in educating their peers and communities on the urgent need for environmental stewardship and responsible practices. The Reverend’s call for intensified public education and sensitization efforts is a direct response to this growing crisis. He urged youth to embrace a paradigm shift, moving beyond simply advocating for environmental protection; they must actively participate in driving change through informed engagement.

Furthermore, Mr. Twum stressed the vital importance of shared responsibility, emphasizing that environmental protection is not solely the purview of government. He described it as a collective duty that demands the involvement of individuals, communities, and institutions – a crucial recognition of the interconnectedness of these stakeholders. The Reverend underscored that the current legal framework often fails to adequately address these issues, and a stronger focus on enforcement is essential to deter environmentally destructive behavior. He pointed out that, according to data from the Ministry of Local Government, 59.3% of Ghanaian households currently have access to improved sanitation facilities, a statistic that underscores the urgent need for improved infrastructure and waste management systems.

The issue of environmental enforcement has been a subject of considerable concern recently, with the recent trial of Ken Ofori-Atta scheduled to resume on August 27th. Mr. Nkrumah-Odoi Josephson, the District Leader, expressed his disappointment with the current situation, highlighting the lack of consistent and effective penalties for offenders. He called for the strengthening of enforcement mechanisms, asserting that current measures are insufficient to deter those who engage in environmentally damaging activities. Mr. Josephson stressed the need for a more robust and proactive approach to holding those accountable for their actions, ensuring that those who compromise the environment face meaningful consequences. The Reverend stated that the continued destruction of the environment has a profound impact on Ghana’s long-term prosperity, affecting the livelihoods of countless individuals and communities. The emphasis on education and awareness, combined with a renewed commitment to effective enforcement, will undoubtedly be crucial to safeguarding Ghana’s natural heritage for future generations.

Mr. Twum concluded by reiterating the imperative of youth leadership and actively participating in the effort to restore ecological balance. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed confidence in the ability of the Christian youth to champion a sustainable future for Ghana. The message serves as a vital reminder that the fate of the environment is inextricably linked to the well-being of the nation’s people and its future prosperity.
