Jordan Nobbs, a veteran midfielder with a distinguished career in English football, has expressed a palpable sense of optimism regarding Newcastle United’s prospects for promotion to the Women’s Super League. His words, delivered in a recent interview, suggest a belief that the club’s journey toward that goal would be ‘job done’ – a sentiment echoing his longstanding career aspirations and a clear indication of his commitment to the team’s success. Nobbs, who began his career with Sunderland but ultimately moved to Arsenal, has consistently emphasized the importance of achieving a significant milestone, and this sentiment is particularly poignant given Newcastle’s recent struggles in the league.

Born in Durham, Nobbs’s professional career began at Sunderland, where he quickly established himself as a reliable and capable player. However, his path has not been without its challenges, marked by a move to London City, where he faced the pressures of professionalizing the game. He’s since spent time with the Lionesses, highlighting a desire to contribute to a team that has faced setbacks. “I’ve always said it would be like job done, it really would,” Nobbs stated to BBC Sport, emphasizing a desire to contribute positively to the team’s future. This sentiment underlines his ambition and a willingness to take on the responsibility of leading Newcastle towards a significant achievement.

The club’s current manager, Tanya Oxtoby, has been tasked with building a stronger foundation, and Nobbs acknowledges the need for improvement. He revealed that Newcastle’s season last year was marked by a lack of consistent success, with the team finishing sixth in the league. “There wouldn’t be many tick boxes that I think I could possibly do. As soon as I heard from Newcastle [I knew] that is exactly what I wanted to do,” Nobbs explained. He emphasizes a desire to move beyond simply maintaining a position within the league and towards a sustained period of success. This reflects a strategic shift, with Nobbs suggesting a focus on improving the team’s overall performance rather than simply maintaining a low ranking. The club’s transfer window has been busy, with a focus on bringing in new talent to bolster the squad. Nobbs highlighted the importance of this window, stating that ‘too many draws’ held Newcastle back last season, and they are not hiding their ambitions this time around after a busy transfer window.

Looking ahead, Nobbs is keenly aware of the challenges Newcastle faces. He acknowledges that the team’s season has been difficult, and his team-mates are joking that he’s considered a ‘legend’ in women’s football. He’s embracing his role as a leader and is focused on providing experience. “I know we said it last season but I’ve always said things don’t happen overnight. We had a lot of changes,” Nobbs added. The team’s promotion campaign is scheduled to kick off at home against Wolves on September 6th (14:00 BST). The BBC Women’s Football Weekly feed provides further details regarding the season’s progress.

Nobbs’s words underscore a determined approach to the upcoming season, emphasizing the importance of achieving a significant milestone for Newcastle United. His desire to ‘job done’ reflects a clear ambition to elevate the team to a level where promotion is a realistic possibility.
