The Head of Public Affairs at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), John Kapi, has vehemently refuted allegations that the Council deliberately targeted private schools during the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results. Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Kapi stated that no staff member possesses a motive to undermine private schools, dismissing the notion of a coordinated campaign. WAEC, like any large organization, employs a diverse workforce, and he emphasized that no individual has been tasked with targeting private schools, according to Mr. Kapi. This dismissal follows a recent wave of concerns voiced by some private school stakeholders regarding potential unfairness in the 2026 BECE results. Mr. Kapi stated, ‘That is a claim anyone making the allegation must prove, because nobody at WAEC has reasons or capacity to target private schools,’ emphasizing the Council’s commitment to fair and impartial examination processes. He further clarified that WAEC has implemented measures over the years to mitigate leakages, stating that ‘leakages are a thing of the past because we are not saying it hasn’t happened before. It did sometime past,’ referencing the Council’s efforts to identify and address past vulnerabilities in the examination system. According to Mr. Kapi, WAEC has reviewed the weaknesses that contributed to previous leakages and implemented strategies to prevent similar incidents. Specifically, the Council has focused on strengthening examination procedures and ensuring rigorous oversight. He added that candidates are instructed to adhere to clear guidelines during exam centres, and that failure to follow these instructions and be cancelled of their papers constitutes a consequence for the individual, not a result of WAEC’s deliberate targeting of private schools. Mr. Kapi acknowledged that WAEC is composed of people but stressed that the existence of a human element within the institution does not equate to intentional manipulation against private schools. He questioned, ‘Because we also have our children in private schools. Even though I can’t give the percentages, what reason do we have to destroy a system our children are also in?’’ Mr. Kapi’s comments come amidst a growing concern among private school administrators and parents regarding the potential for irregularities in the 2026 BECE results, with allegations suggesting some schools may have been unfairly targeted. WAEC maintains that its processes are guided by established examination rules and procedures, and has challenged any allegations of deliberate targeting to provide evidence to support the claims, citing a comprehensive review of the examination process and ongoing monitoring efforts as evidence of their commitment to transparency and fairness.”
