Ghana has officially extended visa-free travel privileges to the Maldives, Zambia, and Antigua & Barbuda, marking a significant shift in international travel relations. Following a carefully negotiated agreement between Ghana and these three nations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the new visa waivers will take effect, allowing eligible Ghanaian passport holders to traverse these destinations without the need for a traditional visa. This development is being hailed as a boost for tourism and economic collaboration between the three countries.

The agreement, finalized after parliamentary approval, establishes a range of restrictions and benefits for each country. Maldives and Zambia are currently permitting Ordinary, Service, and Diplomatic passports to stay for a maximum of 30 days each, while Antigua & Barbuda allows a maximum stay of 90 days. These numbers are subject to the specific terms and conditions outlined in the respective agreements.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that while visa-free entry is a key component of the initiative, it does not automatically exempt travellers from adhering to the stringent immigration and entry requirements of each destination. ‘Visa-free entry does not exempt them from complying with the immigration and entry requirements of the country of destination,’ the statement clarified, stressing that travellers must still meet all applicable regulations.

To ensure a smooth and compliant travel experience, the Ministry has issued crucial reminders to Ghanaian citizens travelling for work, study, or residence. The visa waiver arrangement does not cover activities requiring permits or specific authorizations, and travellers are strongly advised to obtain the necessary approvals from relevant authorities before departure. ‘Travellers intending to undertake employment, study, residence, or any other activity for which a permit or specific authorisation is required must obtain the appropriate approval from the relevant authorities,’ the Ministry stated. It further cautioned that entry, health, and other requirements can change, necessitating travellers to verify current regulations before embarking on their journey.

The Ministry encourages travellers to verify current entry, health, and other requirements with the relevant authorities or the nearest embassy or high commission before travelling. The agreement is a result of considerable diplomatic efforts and a strategic assessment of regional travel patterns, aiming to foster increased trade and tourism between Ghana and these key destinations. The implementation of this new policy is expected to have a substantial impact on tourism and economic growth for the three nations, representing a significant step forward in facilitating cross-border travel for Ghanaian citizens.

This initiative underscores Ghana’s commitment to promoting international connectivity and facilitating seamless travel for its citizens. The Ministry’s message is clear: responsible travel and adherence to local regulations remain paramount for a positive and secure experience abroad.”
