At least 162 people have been confirmed dead, and the death toll is expected to rise as rescue teams continue their efforts to locate survivors amidst the catastrophic floods that have ravaged the Himalayan region of Nepal. The disaster, which began Wednesday evening, has triggered a massive response from international aid organizations and government agencies, largely driven by the devastating impact on tourism and religious pilgrimages.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed that at least 34 Australians were missing, but cautioned that access and information are currently severely limited due to the scale of the disaster. She stated that the situation is ‘extremely challenging’ and that Australia is deploying a crisis response team to the region, including experts in disaster management and logistical support.

The missing Australians, a diverse group of pilgrimage and tour groups, included individuals from various nationalities and backgrounds. Sunil Sharma, a spokesperson for Nepal’s tourism board, confirmed that Australia is deploying crisis response experts and personnel to the region to assist with rescue and recovery efforts.

The loss of life and the sheer devastation caused by the floods have sparked widespread grief and concern within Nepal, with authorities emphasizing the need for comprehensive assessments of the affected areas. The disaster has significantly impacted Nepal’s tourism sector, which relies heavily on pilgrims and trekkers, and has also affected neighboring countries like India, Canada, Britain, Australia, Japan, and Malaysia, all reporting missing citizens.

The U.S. State Department has not yet released an official number of missing people, but it has stated that it is closely monitoring the situation and deploying a disaster response advisory to the region. The Department has provided $500,000 in humanitarian assistance through the Catholic Relief Services to support communities impacted by the floods, focusing on immediate relief efforts.

The flooding has dramatically altered the landscape of the Rasuwagadhi border crossing, a crucial point for linking China’s Tibet Autonomous Region to Nepal. Videos from the crossing, verified by NBC News, show bridges being severely damaged and swept away in the force of raging waters filled with mud and debris. These videos depict a scene of immense destruction, with rows of buses and trucks overturned and submerged, and entire buildings and structures reduced to rubble. The sheer volume of water, combined with the debris, has created a chaotic and destructive environment.

The situation in Nepal is particularly harrowing, with residents struggling to escape the rising floodwaters and facing the risk of further displacement. Authorities are urging residents to evacuate to higher ground and are providing emergency shelter to those who need it. The ongoing rescue operations are hampered by the scale of the destruction, making it difficult to access affected areas and coordinate rescue efforts effectively. The situation remains fluid, and updates will continue to be provided as the situation evolves.
