The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Techiman North, Johnson Adom, has firmly stated that he lacks information regarding a committee’s decision concerning the closure of the Techiman-Krobo Nursing and Midwifery Training College. Adom stated that he is not a member of the committee established by the Ministry of Health to investigate concerns raised following a student protest. Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Adom asserted that he has no knowledge of any recommendation by the committee for officials to step aside. He clarified that he was not part of the committee’s deliberations, adding that he was not privy to specific recommendations they might have made. The committee is comprised of representatives from the Ministry of Health, the nursing training school, the National Association of Nursing Students, and other professionals involved in the supervision and management of nursing training institutions. Mr Adom explained that the committee comprises members from the Ministry of Health, members from the school, executives of the National Association of Nursing Students, and some officials from the Ministry of Health who supervise the schools. He emphasized that the committee’s composition includes individuals with extensive experience in the nursing sector, and he expressed confidence in their ability to thoroughly assess the concerns raised by students and the community. The committee’s recommendations, according to Mr Adom, are expected to address examination and student preparation, ensuring no student is disadvantaged. However, he maintained that he could not comment on specific decisions, citing his lack of involvement in the committee’s deliberations. As DCE, Mr Adom reports directly to the Regional Minister, who is tasked with following up on the committee’s work and ensuring its progress. He stated that the committee had informed local authorities that after completing their work, they would return to the Ministry of Health to submit their report. Subsequently, he explained that they went back to the Ministry to receive the results of their work as a committee. He urged caution in discussing committee recommendations until the formal report is presented, stating that it will be difficult to speak to any committee member about that when the Regional Minister can speak to them in Accra to see the way forward after the report. The controversy stems from a student protest at the Techiman-Krobo Nursing and Midwifery Training College, which subsequently attracted the attention of authorities, prompting the Ministry of Health to establish a committee to investigate the issues and make recommendations. The committee’s investigation is ongoing, and the Ministry of Health has assured the public that the matter will be followed up,” he added. The situation underscores the importance of transparency and clear communication regarding the investigation and potential outcomes of the committee’s work.
