The government of Ghana remains sharply divided regarding a GH¢20 million donation offered to the families and victims of the recent xenophobia attack, a situation that has ignited considerable political friction and raised concerns about the government’s approach to addressing the nation’s deep-seated social anxieties.

The offer, made by MTN Mobile Group, represents a substantial financial contribution intended to provide immediate support, including financial assistance, psychological counseling, and logistical aid to those affected by the escalating violence and hateful rhetoric.

Initial reports suggested MTN’s generosity stemmed from a desire to demonstrate solidarity with the affected communities, acknowledging the pain and trauma inflicted upon them. However, this initial reaction has been met with significant resistance from several key stakeholders, particularly within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition NDC.

The central point of contention revolves around the adequacy of the donation compared to the scale of the tragedy. Critics argue that the amount, while appreciated, is insufficient to truly alleviate the suffering of those impacted, particularly those who have lost loved ones or experienced significant personal hardship.

In a statement released earlier today, Minister of Interior, Samuel Nettey, acknowledged the gravity of the situation but emphasized the government’s commitment to swiftly and effectively distributing the funds. He stated, ‘We understand the deep sorrow and pain felt by the communities affected by this horrific attack. The government is dedicated to providing the necessary support to facilitate healing and reconciliation.’

However, the statement did little to quell the growing apprehension among some segments of the population. A prominent NDC MP, David Attisi, expressed his deep disappointment, stating, ‘This donation feels like a political maneuver rather than a genuine expression of empathy. The government needs to understand that these are not just numbers; they are human lives, and their suffering demands more than a financial gesture.’

MTN’s spokesperson, Richard Okoro, has responded to the criticism by highlighting the company’s commitment to supporting the community’s recovery. He emphasized that the donation is a demonstration of their responsibility as a corporate citizen and a commitment to the well-being of Ghana. ‘We recognize the profound impact of this tragedy and are deeply saddened by the suffering it has caused. We are committed to working with the government to ensure that these funds are utilized effectively and reach those who need them most,’ Okoro asserted.

Independent analysis from the Ghana Economic Exchange Rate (GEER) suggests that the proposed donation represents a relatively small portion of the total estimated needs following the attack. The GEER estimates that approximately 70% of the victims require immediate financial assistance, alongside substantial psychological support and trauma counseling.

The government’s decision to publicly debate this donation underscores the deep-seated political polarization surrounding the xenophobia crisis. The debate has intensified within the NPP, with some factions advocating for a more aggressive and direct response – potentially involving increased security measures and a stronger emphasis on addressing the root causes of the problem.

The National Security Council (NSC) is currently reviewing the proposed donation and assessing its potential impact on the overall security situation in the country. A detailed consultation is expected to take place within the next 72 hours to determine the best course of action.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Finance has announced a review of the budget allocation for social welfare programs, with a particular focus on addressing the immediate needs of vulnerable communities following the attack. The long-term implications of this donation remain to be seen, but it undoubtedly represents a significant point of contention within the political landscape of Ghana.
