The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Caucus is preparing for a tense morning meeting with Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, following allegations of extortion made against him by Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi. JoyNews reports that senior NPP MPs are demanding answers from Afenyo-Markin, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations, which center on reported losses linked to the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme. The allegations surfaced at the Presidency, where Mr Gyamfi addressed journalists, directly challenging the Minority Leader’s leadership and demanding legal action against Afenyo-Markin if the claims were deemed defamatory.

Mr. Gyamfi subsequently repeated these allegations in a recent interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile, where he urged the Minority to initiate legal proceedings against Afenyo-Markin. Mr Afenyo-Markin vehemently denies the allegations, stating he is considering his legal options and indicating that he is assessing his position. However, the denial hasn’t quelled the pressure from some senior NPP MPs, who believe a more comprehensive response is needed to address the Caucus’ concerns.

The meeting, scheduled for this morning before Parliament’s sitting, is expected to serve as a crucial opportunity for Afenyo-Markin to respond directly to questions from his colleagues and clarify the circumstances surrounding these allegations. Parliament has been temporarily recalled to the floor of the House to focus on urgent legislative business, reflecting the intensifying dispute between the two men regarding the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and the role of GoldBod. This situation is significantly impacting the Minority’s broader concerns about the program’s impact on Ghana’s financial stability, particularly concerning the potential for increased transaction volumes and associated risks. The allegations, originating from Mr Gyamfi, threaten to overshadow the Minority’s substantive discussions regarding regulatory oversight and potential liabilities within the program.

Early reports suggest that the allegations are rooted in a history of alleged financial irregularities involving the Bank of Ghana, raising questions about GoldBod’s oversight and potential conflicts of interest. The GoldBod’s role in the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme is a significant point of contention, with critics arguing that the program’s transparency and accountability are lacking. The unfolding situation underscores a deeper political dynamic within the NPP, where accusations and challenges to leadership are frequently surfacing, potentially impacting the party’s overall legislative agenda. The anticipated meeting underscores the potential for this dispute to escalate, potentially impacting public trust and financial stability.

Further details regarding the specific allegations and the legal ramifications are expected to be revealed during the meeting. The full context of this development is currently being analyzed by political analysts, with significant implications for the NPP’s standing in the upcoming elections.
