The long-abandoned Ntotroso-Tano bridge, a vital artery connecting the Ahafo Region to the rest of Ghana, is poised to reopen after eight years, a landmark achievement for the government and a significant step towards restoring transportation infrastructure. The Ministry of Roads and Highways has announced a completion timeline of September 2026, marking a momentous occasion after nearly eight years of dormancy. The project, a crucial component of the Sunyani–Atronie and Sunyani–Atronie Junction–Acherensua road corridor rehabilitation, is being spearheaded by Alexiboam Company Limited. Currently, the project has achieved 33.38 per cent of its physical progress, a testament to the dedication of the construction team. The Ntotroso bridge’s significance extends beyond mere connectivity; it represents a tangible example of the government’s commitment to revitalizing abandoned bridge projects across the nation. Government officials have identified approximately 50 critical bridges requiring completion, recognizing the vital role these structures play in facilitating economic activity and community development. Roads and Highways Minister, Governs Kwame Agbodza, presented this news during an inspection of road projects in the Bono Region on Thursday, August 19th. He emphasized the importance of reviving these projects, highlighting the difficulties encountered due to incomplete approach roads. Mr. Agbodza expressed considerable criticism of the past practice of constructing bridge components without ensuring the completion of the associated road networks. He stated that the Ministry is now adopting a coordinated approach to ensure that bridges and their connecting roads are delivered together and opened to traffic, a shift designed to streamline the project’s overall completion. ‘The difficult work has been done already,’ he asserted, ‘I don’t expect them to be here in September. At the end of the year, this section should be done.’ The reopening of the Ntotroso bridge is anticipated to alleviate transportation challenges for Dansoman Junction traders and drivers, who are eagerly anticipating the planned drainage repairs that will accompany the bridge’s reopening. Mineworkers, meanwhile, are demanding GH¢380 million locked-up funds, threatening industrial action if their demands are not met. This project represents a substantial investment in regional connectivity, with the potential to significantly boost economic activity and improve access for communities along the affected routes, particularly those relying on the bridge for essential transportation needs.

Furthermore, the completion of the Ntotroso bridge will offer a crucial opportunity to enhance the overall quality of road infrastructure across the Ahafo Region and contribute to Ghana’s broader efforts to promote economic growth and development.”
