Kumasi, Ghana – The city of Kumasi is grappling with a significant and rapidly escalating emergency following a devastating fire that has consumed eleven rooms within a three-story building located in the Manhyia South district. The incident, which occurred early this morning, has triggered widespread concern and underscored the increasing risk of fire incidents within the city’s urban landscape. Initial reports indicate that the blaze originated within the building’s ground floor, quickly spreading upwards, triggering alarms and prompting immediate emergency response efforts.

The building, which was reportedly occupied by a small business – tentatively identified as a tailoring shop – belonged to Mr. Kwame Osei, a local entrepreneur who has been operating in the area for over fifteen years. According to eyewitness accounts and preliminary investigations, the fire started around 3:00 AM, shortly after the building’s electrical system experienced a malfunction. The exact cause of the electrical failure remains under investigation, but authorities are focusing on a possible short circuit. The Manhyia South police station confirmed that the fire is contained to the affected area, but the extent of the damage is considerable.

“We received the alarm at approximately 3:15 AM and immediately launched a response team,” stated Sergeant Samuel Acheampong, a spokesperson for the police. “Our priority is to ensure the safety of residents and prevent further spread of the fire. The building is currently closed to the public, and we are working with fire officials to assess the full extent of the damage and ensure all occupants are accounted for.”

The fire has caused significant disruption to the Manhyia South neighborhood, with residents scrambling to secure their belongings and evacuate from their homes. Local residents have expressed deep concern, with many describing the scene as “horrifying” and “a nightmare.” The Kumasi City Council has mobilized emergency responders, including fire crews, ambulances, and even a canine unit, to the scene.

A spokesperson for the Kumasi Municipality, Mrs. Adwoa Mensah, stated, “The immediate focus is on rescuing anyone who may still be trapped within the building. We are coordinating with the fire department to conduct a thorough search. We are also working with the community to provide support and assistance to those affected by this tragedy.”

The fire department has confirmed that 11 rooms have been completely destroyed, and firefighters are currently battling to contain the blaze. Preliminary reports suggest that the damage to the building’s structure is significant, though the extent of the structural damage is still being assessed. A spokesperson for the Kumasi Fire Service Brigade stated, “We’ve deployed all available resources to the scene. The situation is evolving, and we are working diligently to ensure a swift and effective response.”

The initial investigation is focusing on identifying potential security vulnerabilities within the building and assessing whether any preventative measures could have been implemented to mitigate the risk of such a disaster. The building’s insurance company has been contacted, and a preliminary estimate of the financial loss is underway. The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has issued a flash warning for the region, urging residents to be cautious of potential hazards.

This incident highlights the growing challenges of fire safety in densely populated urban areas like Kumasi. The municipality is currently reviewing its building codes and fire safety regulations to ensure a more robust and proactive approach to protecting its residents. The investigation is expected to continue for several days, and authorities are appealing to the public for any information that may assist in the search and rescue efforts.”

The cost of the fire is estimated to be around 50,000 dollars, with the city council planning to provide temporary housing and assistance to those affected. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of inadequate fire safety measures within the city.
