In Geneva, Switzerland, the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution demanding that all parties in Sudan agree to an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire without preconditions. The document also extends the mandate of an independent international fact-finding mission on violations in the country.

As Al Jazeera reports, 28 of the Council’s 47 members supported the resolution, while 10 states voted against it and nine abstained. Sudan urged Council members to reject the document, saying that the body had not taken its reservations into account.

The Council condemned large-scale violations of international humanitarian law by the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The resolution mentions indiscriminate attacks on civilians, airstrikes and drone strikes that resulted in deaths and the destruction of critical infrastructure, including schools and hospitals.

The warring parties have significantly intensified their use of drones in recent months. According to the UN, drone strikes killed more than 1,100 people during the first five months of the year. The Council also condemned external interference in the war, pointing to illicit financial networks, illegal arms supplies and foreign mercenaries that contribute to the continuation of hostilities.

Separately, the UN World Food Programme said that an airstrike on its convoy travelling between Dilling and Kadugli in South Kordofan state killed a driver and damaged food intended for people in need of aid. According to the agency, the vehicles were clearly marked with official humanitarian logos.

The attack occurred on Saturday, a day after another World Food Programme vehicle struck an explosive device in Dilling after distributing food. The agency demanded a transparent investigation to hold those responsible accountable in accordance with international law.

The war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has continued since April 2023. According to estimates cited by human rights organizations, it has claimed tens of thousands of lives and forced more than 13 million people to flee their homes.
