Man charged for deadly Carletonville crash granted R20,000 bail
The case has been postponed several times to allow for further investigation, with Monday’s proceedings expected to deal with the outcome of representations before the matter can move forward.
It’s been more than two years since the deadly crash that claimed the lives of 11 children and their driver, leaving families waiting for answers and closure.
The State said Van Emmenis was driving a Ford Ranger on JB Marx Road in Fochville when it collided with the taxi, which overturned and caught fire.
The children, who were all under the age of 14, were burnt beyond recognition.
Their identification through DNA testing added another painful chapter for families.
Van Emmenis was arrested and later granted R20,000.
The State did not oppose his bail application, but conditions were imposed, including that he surrender his passport and not interfere with witnesses.
The case has since returned to court on several occasions as investigations continued.
On Monday, the families are again waiting for the court to determine the next step in a case that has kept the tragedy alive for more than two years.
