An inspection conducted by the Greater Accra Regional Fire Command has revealed a concerning situation regarding fire hydrants within the Ministries enclave at Accra, with only five currently functioning compared to a total of approximately 30. The exercise, orchestrated by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and Ghana Water Limited (GWL), was undertaken to assess firefighting preparedness across the region, particularly focusing on critical infrastructure within the government buildings.

The team’s investigation uncovered a significant disparity in the state of the fire hydrants, identifying a range of operational conditions. Five hydrants exhibited strong water pressure, suggesting a robust system capable of delivering essential firefighting capabilities. However, two hydrants demonstrated a low pressure, indicating potential issues with water supply or pressure regulation. The remaining 23 hydrants were deemed non-functional, representing a substantial number of deficiencies.

Regional Fire Officer ACFO II Rashid Nisawu emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the findings necessitate a collaborative effort between GNFS and GWL to address the problem. He advised the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) to actively engage with these partners to initiate the installation of a functioning hydrant after the discovery of the department’s existing one on-site. This proactive measure is a crucial component of a larger strategy aimed at enhancing emergency response capabilities within the region.

The inspection spanned several government institutions within the Ministries enclave, encompassing vital sectors such as the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) as well as the Ministries of Transport, Roads and Highways, Energy and Finance. Beyond these key locations, the team also scrutinized the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the Ghana Health Service (GHS), the National Lottery Authority (NLA), the Court Complex, and the iconic Accra Sports Stadium. The thoroughness of the examination highlights the critical need to proactively maintain and repair these vital assets.

GNFS officials explained that the inspection serves as a vital component of a broader initiative to identify, repair, and restore non-functional fire hydrants before the onset of the upcoming fire season. This proactive approach is designed to significantly improve emergency response capabilities and bolster the protection of lives and property within Accra and the surrounding areas. The team’s assessment underscores the importance of maintaining a robust and readily available water supply during periods of heightened risk, ensuring a swift and effective response to any potential fire incident. The lack of functional hydrants represents a potential vulnerability that demands immediate attention and resolution.

Preliminary data indicates that the number of functional hydrants is significantly lower than the total number of hydrants present. This discrepancy suggests a considerable maintenance backlog, highlighting the need for a comprehensive assessment and repair program.

This inspection is a critical step in bolstering the region’s firefighting readiness, demonstrating a commitment to safeguarding vital infrastructure and ensuring the safety of the community. The focus now shifts to implementing a plan to address this deficiency and restore functionality to the fire hydrants, reducing the risk of fire-related incidents within the region.

Stakeholders should expect to see significant action taken to rectify this situation, prioritizing the swift restoration of these essential resources.
