The Ghana Police Service is intensifying its efforts to combat reckless driving through the implementation of ‘TrafficTech,’ a new automated traffic enforcement system designed to track and penalize motorists who repeatedly violate road traffic regulations. Director of Education, Research and Training of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department, Alexander Kweku Obeng, has cautioned that this system, which utilizes cameras and data analysis, could lead to the revocation of driving licenses for repeat offenders.

Speaking on JoyFM Super Morning Show on Wednesday, August 26, ACP Obeng explained that the initial phase of TrafficTech will involve the automatic recording of traffic violations captured by cameras. “The system will transmit these incidents to a Police back office where designated personnel will review and validate each incident before enforcement action is taken,” he stated. He emphasized that the system’s primary objective is to monitor repeat offenses and apply progressively stricter penalties, as dictated by the Road Traffic Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2590). The law stipulates that motorists cannot be issued a fine for a fifth offense; instead, the police must physically arrest them and process them for Motor Court proceedings.

According to ACP Obeng, the system is intended to discourage motorists from repeatedly breaking traffic rules. He warned that the escalating penalties are a deliberate strategy to discourage reckless driving and promote greater discipline on the roads. He further explained that the automated system won’t simply impose fines without human oversight; rather, officers at the back office will validate captured incidents before any enforcement measures are taken.

The deployment of cameras, sensors, and other technological devices, a key component of the Police Service’s modernization strategy, is part of a broader initiative to enhance traffic enforcement and reduce preventable road accidents. ACP Obeng urged motorists to adhere to prescribed speed limits and other traffic regulations, highlighting the potential for serious legal consequences stemming from persistent violations. He stressed the importance of compliance to safeguard the safety of all road users.

Furthermore, the Police Service is viewing this technology as a critical tool in combating escalating penalties and promoting greater discipline on the roads. The system will be utilized to identify and address patterns of dangerous driving behavior. The Police Service has stated that the deployment of TrafficTech is not intended to simply impose fines without human involvement, but rather to ensure that appropriate action is taken based on the validated incidents.

The introduction of TrafficTech has triggered considerable discussion within the traffic management community, with some expressing concerns about the potential for increased police presence and scrutiny. Read more about the implications of this new technology here: [Insert Link to Article Here]”
