The Dansoman Circuit Court in Ghana has ordered the remand of former Ghanaian boxer, Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, for one week, following an alleged death threat against National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah. The arrest, made on August 25, 2026, by the Accra Regional Police Command, stems from a video circulating on social media depicting a threatening remark by Mr. Okai.

According to police reports, Mr. Okai, who appeared before the court on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, following his apprehension by the Accra Regional Police Headquarters, reported to the authorities following an invitation to assist with investigations into the video. The video, which captured him making what was described as threatening remarks against the NSA Director-General, has sparked considerable concern and scrutiny within the boxing community. The GBIMC, the governing body for boxing in Ghana, has vehemently condemned the alleged conduct, demanding a thorough and impartial investigation.

The GBIMC has issued a formal notice to Ayitey Powers, stating that the alleged behavior constitutes ‘unacceptable’ and ‘potentially damaging’ to the integrity of the sport. They have subsequently initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Okai, suggesting this could escalate the situation and impact his standing within the boxing fraternity. The implications of this development are being viewed with significant concern, particularly given the sensitive nature of the NSA’s role in promoting Ghana’s sporting landscape.

Police have urged the public to exercise caution and refrain from spreading unverified information regarding the case. Mr. Okai is currently being held in police custody until his next court appearance scheduled for September 2, 2026. The police are expected to provide an update on the progress of their investigations at that time, as they continue to gather evidence and assess the scope of the alleged threat. The investigation is currently focused on verifying the authenticity of the video circulating on social media and establishing the precise nature of the alleged remarks made by Mr. Okai.

Initial reports suggest that the threat originated from a social media platform, and the extent of its potential impact on the NSA’s operations remains unclear. The incident has intensified public debate regarding the need for greater oversight and protection within the boxing community, particularly concerning public statements and social media activities. The Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) has urged the public to remain calm and await further updates from law enforcement authorities. The case is currently being treated as a serious matter requiring a comprehensive investigation to determine the full extent of the alleged threat and any potential legal ramifications for Mr. Okai.”

This situation has highlighted the heightened sensitivity surrounding public statements and social media activities within the Ghanaian boxing sector, underscoring the importance of responsible communication and safeguarding the integrity of the sport. The investigation is expected to draw attention to potential issues of accountability and protection for individuals involved in high-profile positions within the community.

Further details regarding the investigation’s progress and potential legal consequences are expected to be revealed in the coming days. The GBIMC has stated its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all involved and is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of ethical conduct within the boxing community.
