An accident victim, Emmanuel Etroo, who had been detained for nearly five months at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi-Takoradi due to an outstanding medical bill of GH¢39,000, has been released following intervention by the Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson. The Minister paid the full amount owed by Etroo and committed GH¢11,000 towards his fifth surgery, a procedure deemed critical for his mobility, according to doctors. The incident began on February 15, 2026, when a Sprinter vehicle reportedly struck Etroo’s motorbike at Ewusiejoe on the Takoradi-Agona road, resulting in a severe right leg fracture requiring multiple surgical interventions. Initially, the driver promised to cover the expenses, but he was unable to meet the full cost, leaving Etroo facing mounting medical bills and a prolonged period of hospitalization. His first surgery alone, costing GH¢15,500, quickly escalated the situation, leading to a significant accumulation of outstanding debt and a continued need for further medical attention. Mr. Etroo, a rubber tapper, had been seeking financial assistance through social media, prompting the attention of Linda Otoo, a Public Health Nurse at the hospital. On Sunday, August 23, 2026, the Minister personally visited Etroo at the hospital, settling the outstanding bill and subsequently committing GH¢11,000 towards his next surgery. Explaining his decision to intervene, Minister Nelson stated that he was profoundly touched by the patient’s plight, recognizing the hardship he was enduring. He explained that he had decided to take full responsibility for the debt, offering to cover the remaining balance and to provide additional support to other patients experiencing similar difficulties. The Western Regional Hospital, particularly the Shift-in-Charge of the Effia-Nkwanta Male Surgical Ward, Alfred Acquah Asiedu, welcomed the intervention, expressing gratitude to the Minister for providing relief to both the patient and the healthcare staff. The intervention was a significant step in alleviating the patient’s financial burden, offering a vital opportunity for him to regain his mobility and well-being. Furthermore, the Minister’s commitment to the surgery underscores his dedication to ensuring that patients receive the necessary medical care, even in challenging circumstances. The incident highlights a growing concern within the region regarding the burden of medical debt, particularly for vulnerable individuals like Mr. Etroo, and the Minister’s proactive response demonstrates a commitment to addressing this issue. According to a report by Accra-based Channel One TV, Linda Otoo, a Public Health Nurse, noted that a group of nurses regularly contributes to the medical bills of patients who are unable to pay, and Mr. Etroo’s bill had become too substantial for the group to handle. With his consent, she appealed to the public, seeking assistance from the Minister. The Minister further stated that he would also explore avenues to provide support to other patients facing similar financial challenges, solidifying his commitment to patient well-being. The situation represents a positive development in addressing the challenges faced by individuals struggling with medical debt in the Effia-Nkwanta region, offering a tangible demonstration of government commitment to healthcare accessibility.
