The Ministry of Interior in Ghana has announced the launch of ‘TraffiTech-GH,’ a groundbreaking digital system designed to revolutionize road traffic enforcement, commencing September 2026. This initiative represents a significant shift in how police departments manage traffic management, moving away from direct contact between motorists and officers. The system, spearheaded by Deputy Minister for the Interior, Ebenezer Terlabi, will utilize a range of technological tools, primarily cameras and digital devices, to monitor traffic violations remotely.

TraffiTech-GH is intended to streamline the process of identifying, tracking, and penalising motorists who violate road traffic regulations. The system’s core function involves the deployment of police control rooms equipped with these digital devices, allowing for centralized monitoring of traffic across the country. Mr. Terlabi explained that the police control room will act as the central point for reviewing captured data and issuing electronic notices to offenders.

He stressed that the introduction of this digital system isn’t intended to diminish the authority of the police but rather to enhance the effectiveness of traffic enforcement. ‘The police control room will be monitoring everything on our roads, so the human contact will be minimal,’ he stated. The system is designed to minimize the number of interactions between police officers and motorists during traffic stops, particularly at points where motorists are stopped for checks.

The Deputy Interior Minister elaborated that the digital system will cover a wide array of offenses, including offenses ranging from speeding to vehicle registration violations. According to a preliminary report, the system is projected to encompass over 47 distinct traffic violations, with motorists receiving personalized electronic notifications detailing the offense, the applicable penalty, and instructions for payment.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Interior’s broader modernization program – a key component of the initiative – aims to reduce opportunities for corruption by limiting face-to-face interactions between motorists and police officers during enforcement. The system is being viewed as a crucial step towards improving service delivery through technology, representing a significant investment in enhancing traffic management across Ghana. The system will integrate cameras and other digital devices into the monitoring process, providing a comprehensive record of traffic violations. The government anticipates that the TraffiTech-GH system will reduce the need for routine searches and checkpoint operations, further contributing to a safer and more efficient transportation network. The system’s rollout is expected to begin in September 2026, with initial implementation focusing on key metropolitan areas.

According to a recent assessment, the system is expected to reduce the need for police officers to conduct routine searches and setting up checkpoints. The implementation of TraffiTech-GH represents a substantial upgrade in policing methods, aiming for a more efficient and technologically driven approach to traffic management. The Ministry of Interior has emphasized that the system is designed to enhance public safety and streamline traffic administration. The system is a reflection of broader reforms aimed at modernizing policing practices and enhancing overall service delivery through technological advancement.”

This initiative is a critical component of the Ministry of Interior’s modernization program, representing a significant investment in improving traffic management and enhancing public safety. The deployment of cameras and digital devices will offer enhanced surveillance capabilities and streamlined enforcement processes. The introduction of TraffiTech-GH underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging technology to address transportation challenges, creating a more efficient and responsive system for motorists and law enforcement.”

“The digital traffic enforcement system is an important part of a larger strategy to modernize policing and improve service delivery through technology,” added Mr. Terlabi. The system’s initial rollout will concentrate on areas with high traffic density, with the goal of establishing a robust and reliable monitoring infrastructure.
