The Queen Mother of Bohye International Fruit Market at Madina, Beatrice Sowah, has issued a stark warning, expressing deep concern about the continued challenges facing Ghana, arguing that even the presence of Jesus Christ as President would not automatically alleviate the country’s problems. Her sentiments follow a growing sense of unease among citizens, particularly concerning the actions and attitudes of the populace, rather than solely focusing on the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) or the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Madam Sowah emphasized that the situation has become increasingly worrying, especially in relation to practices that pose a significant risk to public health. She stated, ‘Even if we beg Jesus Christ to be President in Ghana, we will still suffer. This is not about NDC or NPP or Mahama and Akufo-Addo. It is about the people in the country.’

Madam Sowah expressed a profound sense of anxiety regarding a decline in responsible leadership and public conduct, describing the situation as ‘frightening’. She highlighted a worrying trend of inaction and a lack of accountability amongst individuals and institutions. She recounted a specific incident at the market where she confronted a woman for picking damaged fruits that had been discarded for disposal. According to her, the woman would collect the rejected fruits, carefully cut away the visibly damaged portions, and prepare the remaining parts for sale.

“I pity the schoolchildren, especially because last year I beat up one woman mercilessly. Damaged fruits that we had dumped to be carted away by rubbish collectors; she would come and pick them and cut them nicely to sell. So what is the FDA doing? They are worrying us,” she lamented. She questioned why such practices were tolerated, expressing a grave concern about the potential health risks to unsuspecting consumers, particularly schoolchildren. Her comments come amidst a broader wave of concerns regarding food safety and the sale of potentially unsafe food products, with a clear call for stronger monitoring and enforcement to protect consumers.

Madam Sowah stressed the urgent need for increased scrutiny and action by regulatory bodies like the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and other relevant agencies. She urged them to intensify monitoring and enforcement at markets to prevent the sale of spoiled or unsafe food. She explicitly called for a fundamental shift in priorities, emphasizing that the focus must shift from political maneuvering to addressing the root causes of societal problems. The potential consequences of unchecked practices, she warned, could be devastating, highlighting the need for immediate and decisive action.

The situation has resonated deeply with many Ghanaians, reflecting a growing disillusionment with the current political landscape and a desire for tangible change. The Queen Mother’s words serve as a potent reminder of the importance of prioritizing the well-being of the nation, not just the immediate political game.

This situation underscores the vulnerability of Ghanaians, particularly children, to potentially harmful food products. The FDA’s current approach, she stated, is ‘worrying us’, implying a lack of proactive measures to safeguard public health. The long-term implications of this situation demand serious consideration and a renewed commitment to responsible governance and public safety. The potential ramifications extend far beyond the immediate market, potentially impacting the entire nation’s economic and social fabric.

This situation represents a significant challenge to the integrity of the marketplace and raises questions about the safety and quality of the food supply within Ghana. It is imperative that the authorities take swift and effective action to address these concerns and prevent similar incidents from occurring. The future of Ghana’s well-being is inextricably linked to the health and safety of its citizens.
