The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is intensifying its demand for a permanent fire station in Gushegu, following a devastating fire outbreak at the National Teachers Council (NTC) ICT laboratory facility earlier this week. The incident, which occurred on Monday, August 17, 2026, resulted in the destruction of computers and a range of learning equipment, prompting a swift response from regional authorities.
The fire, ignited at the NTC facility, quickly spread, causing significant damage to the building’s infrastructure. According to preliminary investigations, the blaze started around 11:00 AM and consumed a considerable area of the laboratory, impacting critical learning resources and hindering the NTC’s operations. The Regional Fire Commander, leading a delegation, immediately assessed the situation and initiated a comprehensive assessment of the damage.
Following the incident, the Regional Fire Commander, addressing local authorities, emphasized the critical need for a permanent fire station in Gushegu. The Municipal Chief Executive, Hafiz, the Municipal Coordinator, and representatives from the Municipal Assembly were convened to discuss the urgent matter. The discussion centered on the necessity of establishing a dedicated fire station to safeguard the municipality from future fire hazards.
The Assembly subsequently took the delegation to inspect a parcel of land designated for the construction of the proposed station. Mr Hafiz assured the GNFS that the Assembly was fully committed to commencing work on the project before the end of the year, with a timeline of completion within the next 12 months.
Furthermore, the delegation visited the Karaga District Assembly, where the Deputy Coordinating Director, Ms. Adwoa, was received. Discussions there focused on the establishment of another fire station to serve the Karaga and neighboring communities. The Regional Fire Commander explained that the development would significantly reduce response times to emergencies, particularly in the region, and bolster protection efforts for schools, public institutions, businesses, and residential areas.
The residents and school authorities in Gushegu have expressed considerable optimism regarding this development, highlighting that a permanent fire station would greatly strengthen the municipality’s preparedness and response capabilities to future fire emergencies. They are hopeful that the Assembly will prioritize this crucial initiative and expedite the process of commencing construction as soon as possible to ensure the safety and security of the community.
According to local officials, the incident has already impacted the NTC’s ability to conduct crucial training and research, posing a considerable setback for the municipality’s educational sector.
