The Bono Regional Police Command has formally arrested Gyamfi Christian, a 36-year-old man, in connection with a suspected fake gold scam occurring in the Berekum Municipality of Ghana. The arrest, following intelligence-led investigations initiated on August 17, 2026, marks a significant development in a case that began in July 2026 when Christopher Awuni, a gold aggregator, reported a transaction involving four men falsely claiming to sell 110 troy ounces of gold for GH¢1.1 million. The initial report detailed a scheme where these individuals, allegedly operating under the guise of gold sellers, offered the gold to Christian, who subsequently tested and confirmed its fraudulent nature. The recovered gold has since been retained by the police as evidence, constituting a key part of the ongoing investigation.

Initial testimony placed Christian at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality, the location where the alleged transaction took place. During interrogation, Christian admitted to his involvement in the scheme and stated that the deal involved a group of four men. The identified accomplices are Abraham, identified as ‘Frenchman,’ believed to be the group’s leader, Isaac Antwi, and Balthazar. Authorities currently believe these individuals are at large and are actively pursuing them. The police investigation has also uncovered a separate, related incident where a similar group allegedly defrauded another victim of GH¢1.4 million in a separate transaction at Drobo earlier this year. This second instance further solidifies the scope of the alleged fraud.

The Bono Regional Police Command has issued a precautionary alert to the public, urging caution when engaging in gold transactions, particularly those involving unsolicited offers. They have stressed the importance of reporting any suspicious or irregular activities to the authorities, emphasizing that cooperation is crucial in combating this type of financial crime. The command is committed to upholding the law and protecting the financial interests of the public. The investigation is ongoing, and the police are working diligently to locate and apprehend all individuals involved in this alleged syndicate.

Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses. The Berekum Municipality remains under scrutiny as the police continue to gather evidence and pursue leads. The case underscores the need for heightened vigilance against financial crimes and the vital role of law enforcement agencies in maintaining public safety and security. The initial statement from Tanoso Ankobeahene, a member of the GAF, further highlights the ongoing efforts to combat alleged task force activities, suggesting a broader strategy to combat organized crime within the region. The police are focused on recovering the stolen gold and bringing the perpetrators to justice. The investigation is currently being managed by officers from the Bono Regional Police Command. The focus remains on identifying the perpetrators and preventing further fraudulent activities, and to ensure the protection of the financial interests of the public.
