The Coalition of Unemployed Graduates with Disabilities is scheduled to hold a picket at the Jubilee House today, August 19, to voice their concerns regarding the government’s inadequate recruitment of individuals with disabilities into public institutions. The group, representing over 200 graduates, asserts that recent public-sector recruitment exercises have failed to adequately include qualified candidates with disabilities, despite efforts from authorities to provide the government with a list of graduates seeking employment. According to the Coalition, it submitted a verified list of 200 qualified graduates with disabilities for consideration during the recently conducted recruitment exercise by the Ghana Education Service (GES). However, the group highlights that none of these individuals were recruited. The Coalition argues that this lack of recruitment raises serious concerns about the implementation of legal provisions designed to promote the inclusion of persons with disabilities in employment opportunities. It is therefore, calling on the government to immediately address the issue by issuing 400 to 500 financial clearances to facilitate the recruitment and deployment of its members to various government institutions. Speaking to Citi News, Convenor Gilbert Boateng Agyare emphasized the group’s demand for the Ministry of Finance to issue these clearances, stating that this would enable the deployment of the graduates to government institutions. ‘We want the Finance Ministry to issue 400 to 500 financial clearances to help deploy our people to the various government institutions,’ Agyare said. The Coalition contends that the planned picket at Jubilee House is intended to draw attention to President John Dramani Mahama and relevant authorities regarding the employment challenges faced by qualified graduates with disabilities. The group expresses hope that the government will respond to their concerns and implement concrete steps to improve the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in public-sector employment.
