The National Identification Authority (NIA) has issued a crucial update regarding its newly established 24-hour Prestige Centre at Labone, a facility that’s being presented as an optional service, not a replacement for its established district offices across Ghana. The NIA’s official statement indicates that the Prestige Centre, commencing operations on August 1, 2026, offers enhanced convenience, flexibility, and expedited access to Ghana Card-related services for those seeking a more streamlined experience. The facility operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends, a key distinction emphasized by the NIA.

The Authority has explicitly stated that the introduction of the Prestige Centre does not mandate the use of premium or prestige services for the general public. ‘The introduction of the Prestige Centre therefore does not make the use of a Prestige Centre compulsory,’ the NIA emphasized, underscoring the agency’s commitment to maintaining its existing, comprehensive service network.

The NIA explains that its 276 district offices remain fully operational and continue to provide vital services such as Ghana Card registration and related procedures. For those under 25 years of age, initial registration is entirely free, while applicants aged 25 and above are subject to a processing fee of GH¢30. The NIA’s rationale for this expansion centers on complementing, rather than replacing, its existing service infrastructure.

The NIA further clarifies that the Prestige Centre is designed to enhance service delivery. It’s presented as a superior service intended to provide greater convenience, increased flexibility, and faster processing times for individuals seeking more efficient access to NIA services. The agency stressed that the facility’s fee-based nature distinguishes it from standard district office charges.

Furthermore, the NIA has acknowledged that the revised Ghana Card fees were approved by Parliament, not unilaterally introduced, a detail that has sparked discussion within the public sector. The NIA is actively monitoring and responding to public concerns regarding the Prestige Centre, including a recent announcement that unemployed graduates with disabilities will be protesting at Jubilee House today. This action reflects a proactive approach by the NIA to address potential public apprehension and ensure transparency in its service provision. The district offices remain open for all Ghana Card-related registrations and services, providing a vital point of access for the vast majority of Ghanaians. The NIA has stated that the Prestige Centre will continue to operate as a significant component of the overall service delivery network, focusing on maximizing efficiency and accessibility.

The statement also highlights the NIA’s commitment to maintaining its established district office network, recognizing the importance of this infrastructure for serving the majority of the Ghanaian population. The agency has stated that the Prestige Centre is being implemented to enhance the overall user experience and improve the speed of service delivery.”
