UK Parents Face Concerns Over IVF Donor Misinformation in Northern Cyprus

At least 30 children, many of them British, are feared to have been conceived by IVF treatment in northern Cyprus using the wrong sperm or egg donors. This disturbing discovery, revealed in a BBC investigation, exposes a concerning pattern of misleading information to UK parents seeking fertility treatment abroad. The investigation uncovered seven cases of these concerns, prompting a wider inquiry into the clinic’s practices.

The core of the allegations centers on the apparent failure of Dogus IVF Centre and its staff to accurately inform parents about the donors used in their treatments. All parents report suspicions that they received the wrong sperm or egg donors, a significant departure from the expectations of a reputable fertility clinic. The investigation points to a systemic problem, with several key figures – Dr Firdevs Uguz Tip, Dr Sevket Alpturk, and Julie Hodson – involved in the care of numerous patients, raising questions about their responsibility and oversight.

All parents say they carefully selected anonymous donors based on detailed information, including medical history, appearance, personality, education, and hobbies. However, concerns have emerged regarding the potential lack of awareness regarding donor identity. Half of the 30 children were born from procedures at one clinic, Dogus IVF Centre, and the majority were conceived through IVF between 2012 and 2024. The BBC has now learned that the world’s largest sperm bank, Cryos International, has blacklisted Dogus since 2016. Dogus, a loosely regulated clinic located in northern Cyprus, is only legally recognized by Turkey, and promises patients of low prices, high success rates, and a wide array of donor options.

Northern Cyprus is a territory where European Union laws do not apply, and is only recognized by Turkey, creating a complex regulatory environment. Clinics in the region often operate with minimal oversight and prioritize attracting patients at any cost. The practice of using this model has been criticized for potentially creating a situation where deception and misrepresentation could occur. The investigation highlights a significant rarity of the alleged error, with 30 children potentially affected, raising serious questions about negligence or deliberate deception.

It’s been revealed that the clinic’s practices have been linked to the world’s largest sperm bank, Cryos, which blacklisted Dogus in 2016 following a concern that the clinic had failed to order sperm for a patient despite saying it would. This action has further intensified the scrutiny.

Several patient co-ordinators at Dogus, including Hodson, repeatedly refused to send medical reports confirming the donor’s identity, and this is a concerning aspect. While Dr Firdevs denies wrongdoing, neither Alpturk nor Hodson have responded to our requests for more information. This lack of transparency is fueling concerns about accountability.

Following the initial findings, the BBC approached Cryos, who stated that they have no record of ever delivering sperm to the Dogus clinic. This discrepancy contradicts the clinic’s claims of a long-standing relationship with the sperm bank. The BBC has also been investigating the involvement of Firdevs and Miracle IVF, the two other clinics that had a relationship with Dogus. The investigations have revealed that Firdevs was the doctor responsible for signing off procedures at the clinic and that she has been repeatedly accused of not placing orders with Cryos.

The BBC has contacted Hodson, who claims she deliberately failed to place orders with Cryos or did not pass these patient requests on to Dogus staff. However, she has not responded to our attempts to contact her. The investigation is ongoing, with concerns that the full extent of the deception could be revealed.

The DNA testing conducted on the children has revealed that many have inherited Turkish and southern European ancestry, a significant deviation from the expected donor origin. This discovery underscores the potential for a deliberate attempt to manipulate the donor picture. The BBC has also been contacted by the British Fertility Society, who have expressed concerns about the scale and potential impact of the alleged deception.

The case raises serious questions about the ethics of fertility clinics and the responsibility of those involved in the process. The BBC is continuing to investigate, and we will provide further updates as they become available. The situation has further highlighted the importance of robust oversight and transparency within the reproductive healthcare industry. The future of many families, and their children, may now be uncertain.
