On Monday, August 17, 2026, at the Accra International Airport, 86 Ghanaian evacuees from South Africa, collectively known as the ‘Evacuation Boys,’ formally announced their commitment to contribute to Ghana’s development through targeted sanitation efforts and a renewed focus on environmental cleanliness. The group, originating from the South African repatriation exercise, represents a significant influx of returning nationals, with the number of evacuees exceeding 1,700 since the initial phase of the government’s repatriation exercise from South Africa. Leading the group is Richard Addai, spokesperson for the ‘Evacuation Boys,’ who stated, ‘We are back for good and we want to give back to our country.’

The group’s slogan, ‘Evacuation Boys; We Came Back to Give Back,’ underscores this commitment, reflecting a desire to leverage their shared experience in South Africa – characterized by painful encounters with xenophobic attacks – to positively impact Ghana’s progress. The evacuees, a diverse group, arrived at the airport under the second phase of the government’s repatriation program, highlighting the scale of the return. Mr. Addai explained that while the group endured challenging circumstances, their return represents a profound opportunity for contributing to national development.

Prior to their arrival, the group had been in South Africa for approximately one to two weeks, a number that has steadily increased since the initial repatriation exercise. The government has implemented measures to facilitate the return of Ghanaians, including transportation assistance and reintegration support. Medical and psychosocial support were also made readily available, recognizing the potential for trauma and distress experienced by some individuals during their time in South Africa. Specifically, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under the leadership of Coordinating Director Harold Agyemang, has emphasized the government’s intent to ensure the successful reintegration of these returnees into society.

Furthermore, the government has announced that the return of Ghanaians from South Africa will extend beyond mere physical evacuation, incorporating a focus on their successful rebuilding of lives and economic stability. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also provided assistance to ensure the returnees can travel to their respective destinations, and has provided support to restart their lives. Agyemang noted that the government’s intervention is aimed at supporting the evacuees in rebuilding their lives and regaining their footing after the difficult circumstances that led to their return.

The ‘Evacuation Boys’ pledge to actively engage with the government, private sector, and individuals to mobilize support for sanitation initiatives and other community-based programs. Their initial appeal directly addresses the government’s efforts to facilitate the reintegration of returning citizens, with the goal of fostering meaningful contributions to Ghana’s national development. The group’s involvement signals a renewed emphasis on establishing a sustainable and collaborative approach to rebuilding communities and ensuring the well-being of Ghanaian nationals.

Detailed reports and analyses of the repatriation process, including the challenges faced by the evacuees, are being conducted by various stakeholders. The government has also begun the repatriation of citizens who wish to return home, with the first batches arriving in Ghana earlier in the exercise. During a reception for returnees, Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa stated that the government’s intervention was not solely focused on bringing citizens home safely, but also on facilitating their rebuilding of lives and establishing their footing in Ghana. The group’s return represents a significant step towards revitalizing communities and ensuring the long-term well-being of Ghanaian nationals. The group’s commitment to supporting sanitation and environmental cleanliness underscores their desire to contribute positively to Ghana’s future.

“We are back for good and we want to give back to our country,” Richard Addai stated. The group’s actions highlight a renewed appreciation for Ghana and a dedication to contributing to the communities they have returned to, signifying a proactive approach to rebuilding and strengthening the nation’s social fabric.
