The Adom Online news report details a concerning escalation in threats targeting key prosecution witnesses involved in the former Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako’s (Wontumi) conviction, leading to a significant shift in security arrangements. Deputy Attorney General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai revealed this on Monday’s Joy News PM Express, stating that the threats have intensified since the conviction, with the two witnesses and police investigators specifically targeted. The report details a pattern of escalating threats, extending beyond the Wontumi case to encompass a broader range of serious criminal investigations across the jurisdiction, including murder, robbery, and armed robbery cases, according to Justice Srem-Sai. He emphasized that the threats have become increasingly personal, including direct threats to his life, and that the legal system itself is not immune to such dangers. He stated that the threats have increased since the conviction, and he acknowledges that the nature of the threats is evolving. Specifically, he mentioned threats to kill him, and he added that the legal system isn’t solely reliant on physical security; the level of protection available is dependent on the specific responsibilities and nature of the threats. The report highlights that prosecutors, judges, and other legal professionals also face similar threats, illustrating a broader pattern of vulnerability across the criminal justice system. The Deputy Attorney General explained that he treats every threat as a serious matter, and the nature of the threats has varied, encompassing threats to kill, and the introduction of additional threats related to the severity of the crimes that are being prosecuted. He noted that he doesn’t believe it is necessary to publicly disseminate every threat, arguing that doing so could undermine the enforcement of the law by allowing threats to be used to hinder the pursuit of justice. He reiterated his personal safety, stating that he relies on both physical security measures and his faith. He explained that state protection has limitations due to the differing levels of responsibility and the nature of the threats. He stated that his ultimate source of reassurance remains his faith, emphasizing his commitment to the Lord. The disclosure that the two witnesses have been given police protection occurred following a direct question from Justice Srem-Sai about their safety, indicating a heightened level of concern within the legal community. The situation underscores the seriousness with which the prosecution is treating the case and the increasing risk faced by those involved. The report suggests that the heightened tensions following Wontumi’s conviction and the prosecution’s handling of the case may be contributing to this escalation, creating a more perilous environment for these individuals. The details of this evolving security landscape are significant, impacting not only the Wontumi case but also broader considerations within the legal system and the protection of individuals involved in criminal investigations.”}” ,
