The recent promotion of Constable [Constable’s Name] to Lance Corporal by Police Inspector-General Christian Tetteh Yohuno has ignited a significant conversation within the Ghana Police Service. This isn’t simply about a rank increase; it’s a deliberate strategy aimed at bolstering morale, recognizing outstanding service, and ultimately strengthening the institution’s core values. The initiative, spearheaded by the Police Administration under the leadership of IGP Yohuno, represents a fundamental shift in how the service rewards its officers, moving away from purely administrative promotions towards a system centered on demonstrable bravery, integrity, and exceptional performance.

Prior to Yohuno’s tenure, a significant challenge had emerged: a protracted period where deserving officers had often been overlooked despite consistently exhibiting courage and valor in the line of duty. Regulation 37 of the Police Service Regulations, 2012, provides a framework for promotions based on merit, but the effectiveness of this system had been demonstrably lacking for years. This lack of tangible recognition fostered a sense of disillusionment and a potential decline in morale among the ranks.

Under the renewed emphasis of the IGP’s initiative, a policy shift has been implemented, dramatically increasing the number of senior officers receiving special recommendations. As reported by Graphic Online, 128 senior officers were promoted, representing a substantial increase from the previous year. The Police Administration, under the leadership of IGP Yohuno, has set a clear objective: to reward excellence while continuing with regular administrative promotions.

This transformation is evident in the figures released by the IGP’s Secretariat: 573 senior officers received special recommendations in 2025, a substantial increase from 128 in 2024. Furthermore, 445 administrative promotions were awarded, bringing the total to 573, demonstrating the breadth of the program’s impact. The number of promoted officers is further bolstered by 1,615 special recommendation promotions in 2026, showcasing the full extent of the policy’s implementation.

The impact of this initiative is being felt across various sectors, with the IGP highlighting the crucial role of officers who distinguished themselves during high-risk operations. The recent history of the Ghana Police Service is replete with examples of exemplary service, including the arrest of suspects linked to the Adabraka gold robbery, the rescue of robbery victims, the arrest of seven robbery suspects in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions, the arrest of suspects linked to the GB Oil Filing Station robbery and murder, and the apprehension of suspects linked to the gruesome murder of the Queen Mother of Abamba near Atebubu in the Bono East Region. These successes demonstrate a growing recognition of the value of dedicated service.

The IGP himself has acknowledged the importance of these efforts, stating that ‘special recommendation’ should be solely based on officers who have gone above and beyond their normal duties to do the extraordinary to make their communities and Ghana safe. He has also emphasized the need for fairness in the process, stressing that the policy should be purely based on officers who have demonstrated exceptional bravery, integrity, and outstanding service.

The beneficiaries of this renewed focus, including Corporal [Constable’s Name] and others, are overwhelmingly grateful for the recognition. The initial statement from Corporal [Constable’s Name] reveals a genuine sense of appreciation, expressing delight at the acknowledgment of their efforts. Another beneficiary, now a Chief Inspector, welcomed the policy, though urged fairness and a more robust review of the Police Service Regulations to ensure that all officers are adequately protected.

The Police Management Board (POMAB) has affirmed its commitment to supporting the IGP’s vision, indicating that the recognition will be further emphasized through increased protection measures and enhanced safeguarding of personnel engaged in high-risk operations. The Deputy Director of the Intelligence Unit, DSP Mr. Mohammed Abdul Hanan, stated that the IGP intends to expedite the review of the Police Service Regulations to incorporate a wider scope of officers, ensuring that those with academic qualifications also benefit from this crucial initiative.

The policy’s success is being monitored through a comprehensive review of police operations, a critical step to ensure that the program’s long-term effectiveness and continued support for the Police Service.

The IGP’s unwavering commitment to recognizing excellence underscores the imperative for the Ghana Police Service to continue prioritizing the welfare, safety, and professional development of its officers, thereby reinforcing its commitment to protecting the nation’s citizens. The policy, while a significant step, remains a crucial focal point for ensuring the continued stability and effectiveness of the force.
