Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has vehemently denied allegations of deliberately withholding data concerning river turbidity and pollution levels, stemming from a video circulating on social media. The company’s statement, issued on Monday, August 17, 2026, clarifies its established procedures for monitoring water quality within its treatment facilities. GWL emphasizes that its internal turbidity tests are a crucial part of its water treatment process, with the company shutting down treatment plants when turbidity surpasses pre-defined safety thresholds. The company’s internal tests are conducted as part of a comprehensive process, and the data is crucial for ensuring safe and compliant water supplies.

GWL clarified that it does not possess official data concerning natural river bodies. The responsibility for monitoring these waterways and maintaining turbidity levels, according to the company, lies with the Water Resources Commission (WRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This dual responsibility structure underscores the collaborative approach to environmental stewardship. The company explicitly states, “GWL does not hold official data on natural river bodies,” a statement that directly contradicts the narrative of withholding information.

In response to accusations made by a journalist, GWL refuted the assertion that it was denied access to information at its Kwanyako Treatment Plant. The company’s official records demonstrate that the journalist did not visit the facility. Furthermore, GWL unequivocally rejected the claim that the Presidency directed it to withhold data, stating unequivocally, ‘It is therefore totally untrue that the Presidency has directed GWL to withhold river turbidity data.’

The company’s defense underscores the importance of distinguishing between the distinct mandates of the water utility, the WRC, and the EPA when evaluating information related to river pollution and turbidity. GWL emphasizes that a clear understanding of these roles is essential for accurate assessment and effective regulation of water quality. The company strongly advises the public to treat claims circulating in the video with caution and to avoid drawing unwarranted conclusions about the company’s operational practices. GWL’s commitment is to maintaining transparency and adhering to established regulatory standards, ensuring the provision of safe and reliable water resources for the Ghanaian people. The company’s ongoing commitment to robust water quality monitoring is a cornerstone of its operational strategy. The data collected and analyzed is vital for maintaining the integrity of the water supply system. The investigation into the source of the video circulating on social media remains ongoing, and GWL is cooperating fully with authorities to determine its origin and veracity. The company has also stated its dedication to upholding environmental regulations and protecting the integrity of its water infrastructure. The long-term goal is to ensure sustainable water management practices, protecting the environment and the health of the Ghanaian population.
