The Accra Circuit Court has formally charged Peter Nana Kwadwo Ofosu Ayeh, a prominent gold dealer in Ghana, over a brazen $160,000 gold fraud. The charges stem from alleged deliberate misrepresentation and fraudulent transactions involving a kilogramme of gold, a sum that has ignited considerable controversy within the gold trading community and raises serious questions about the integrity of the sector. Ofosu Ayeh, 62 years old, was brought before the court this morning following an arraignment, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigation into potential financial irregularities.

The core of the alleged crime centers a transaction reported to have occurred between January 1st and March 15th, 2024. According to prosecution officials, the fraud involves a false pretence, meaning Ofosu Ayeh deliberately misrepresented the true nature of the gold transaction to obtain a financial advantage. The prosecution alleges that the alleged transaction, involving a kilogramme of gold, valued at $160,000, was orchestrated with the intent to defraud investors and creditors. This is a significant amount of money, particularly given the relatively small value of the gold itself, and the potential for substantial financial losses for those involved.

The court has granted Ofosu Ayeh bail of $100,000, a sum which he is expected to post as security. This bail condition, however, is contingent upon his compliance with several critical requirements, including the surrender of his passport and his National Identification card to the court registry. The prosecution is seeking to establish a clear timeline of events and to demonstrate the defendant’s culpability in the alleged offense.

Furthermore, the court has ordered Ofosu Ayeh to provide three sureties – individuals who will be required to appear before the court and guarantee his appearance in the proceedings. These sureties must be residents of Accra, a requirement deemed crucial for maintaining the integrity of the judicial process. The prosecution is confident that the sureties will provide essential evidence to corroborate the defendant’s account of the events leading to this alleged fraud.

The proceedings are scheduled to continue on November 2nd, 2026, at the Accra Circuit Court. Authorities have emphasized the importance of upholding the legal framework and ensuring transparency within the gold trading industry, and this case represents a key component of that effort. The investigation, initially initiated by the Economic and Financial Crime Centre (EFCC), is currently focused on tracing the origin of the alleged gold and identifying any other potential suspects involved in this complex scheme. The value of the alleged fraud, coupled with the potential for significant financial repercussions, has prompted considerable scrutiny and heightened public concern within the Ghanaian gold market. The prosecution is seeking a conviction that will deter similar fraudulent activities in the future, safeguarding the financial interests of investors and creditors.

Preliminary reports indicate that Ofosu Ayeh has a history of dealings with numerous gold dealers and has been flagged as a potential source of illicit funds. The court is expected to delve deeper into the defendant’s financial records and business dealings to establish a definitive link between the alleged fraud and his activities.
