Ghana has ascended to sixth position among the world’s largest gold-producing countries following a remarkable increase in production figures for 2025, a development that has significantly altered the global dynamics of gold mining.
The year saw Ghana produce a substantial 185 tonnes of gold, surpassing the United States’ position in global rankings. This achievement represents a noteworthy shift in the industry, reversing a traditional trend where Ghana had consistently held the seventh position.
Mr. Nyarko, Director of Analysis, Research and Finance at the Ghana Chamber of Mines, explained that the decline in US production, coupled with Ghana’s increased output, triggered this change. ‘Last year [2025], they ran into some technical issues. So production for the country as a whole dropped. And of course, given the dynamics in Ghana, we saw Ghana displace the United States,’ he stated.
The data indicates that Ghana’s 2025 output reached a record 5.94 million ounces, with small-scale mining accounting for 52.38% of total production. This marks the first time in over a century that the small-scale sector has surpassed large-scale mining in Ghana’s commercial gold production.
The Chamber reports Ghana is now ranked behind China, Russia, Australia, Canada, Peru, and then Ghana, with the order of some of the leading producers sometimes differing depending on the data source. ‘Even depending on the kind of source of your data, there’s always some tension between Russia, China, and Australia, in terms of who is the largest producer,’ Mr. Nyarko noted.
The Chamber projects further growth in Ghana’s gold production for 2026, forecasting a national output range of 6.1 to 6.7 million ounces, reflecting a commitment to bolstering the nation’s economic prosperity through gold extraction.
This development has implications for both Ghana’s economy and global gold markets, highlighting the country’s growing importance in the industry and its potential to continue playing a key role in the global gold supply chain.
